Fit for Purpose 8 Oct 2008
The important thing to know about this scanner is that it is very good at scanning books, which is what it was designed for. It is not very good for photograph scanning. I scan books for a living and turn them into digitized facsimile versions on CD. Some of the books I scan are very old and delicate and include some hefty tomes several inches thick. This scanner has saved me hours of work that I used to have to spend "cleaning up" images. It virtually eliminates shadows even on tightly bound books. If I have a book with illustrations, I scan them on a photo scanner at a higher dpi and cut and paste, thus having the best of both worlds. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to scan books, especially if they are text only.

I purchased this scanner about a month ago and I have been extremely pleased with the results. I have scanned over 3000 pages so far and I have found it to be very quick and accurate. It will not solve the problem of some paperbacks that are very closely printed to the spine, but I have had good success scanning 2 pages with the book flat. On a B&W scan there is little shadowing down the spine when the book is scanned flat and absolutely no shadowing on HB books when using the 'edge'. I haven't experienced any problems with the bundled software as yet and I find book pilot excellent. All in all it was money well spent and I recommend it.

Scans Books Well 18 April 2010
I have been using this scanner for three months now to scan my personal collection of books. My plan is to be able to read my books anywhere I want (in pdf form) on a 10.1 inch netbook. The scanner works well with Paperport V.11. Books are easy to scan because of the unique shape of the scanning platform. The quality of image is excellent. It scans more quickly than my other traditional scanner. It has not frozen or crashed yet as reported in some other reviews. However, I think that is because the computer I have been using has very little software on it. In fact for the past month I have been using my Acer 10.1 netbook to scan with it and am delighted that it works without a hitch. I do make a point of rebooting my netbook after about three hours of scanning just to avoid overloading the ram memory etc.. If this scanner lasts me for a few years I will be one very happy customer.

I read all the reviews before buying so I was aware that the software included with this scanner was not very good. It isn't very good in fact, it is appalling. Read more

Dodgy software
Absolutely superb book scanner but badly let down by the Page Manager 7 software - would dread to think what versions 1 to 6 were like. Read more

Impressive hardware. Some disappointing software.
Took a couple of days to play around with the main options, but once familiarised with the scanner and the book manager software it was really impressive. Read more

Excellent scanner, poor software
This scanner proved excellent for scanning an 18th-century manuscript, although the author had written into the gutter, so each page had to be placed individually on the platten. Read more

A very good all round scanner
The Opticbook 3600 is very good for everything, from photos of all tones, documents and email. It has a very high speed scan mode and a lower mode for more detail. Read more

This scanner is superb
I need to scan antiquarian books, and for this job the 3600 is superb. You can scan even frail books with little stress to the spine. Read more

Awkward
The software is very poor - unintelligible interface, slow, bloated. I've been using the WIA driver instead of the TWAIN so I don't have to use it. Read more
