Review

Hubert, Margaret. Plus Size Crochet: Fashions That Fit & Flatter FIBER CRAFTS Plus-size pattern designers fit roughly into two camps: the flaunt-your-curves designers and the disguise-those-figure-flaws-and-look-slimmera designers. In this booka one of the few titles available on crocheting for the plus-size figure Hubert, a longtime crochet teacher and author, places herself squarely into the second camp. The book contains 20 figure-flattering designs for cardigans, jackets, and accessories for sizes 1X to 4X, all with complete step-by-step instructions and clear photos of each project, plus close-up photos of garment details and the yarn used in the designs. Enthusiastically recommended for public libraries --Library Journal, December 2007

Fed up with doing the maths to scale up the crochet patterns? This is the book for you. margaret hubert has created 20 designs in bust sizes from 43-60 ins (109-152cm), plus advice on how to make them work for you, including tips for what to do if your bust and hips size fall into two different sizes on the chart. The designs are mainly tops, coats and cardigans, but also include two wraps and a bag. Margaret is an American designer, so the crochet terms and yarn used differ freom the British ones, but the gorgeous projects are worth taking the time to translate. We love the mix of styles she uses and her clever details. --Simply Knitting, August, 2009

Loved this book. It has a wide variety of basic patterns, from a metallic tunic to lacey tops to a coat. The shawl is beautiful, and the purse pattern gives us a purse that is "in proportion". Also very uselful is the first section that explains how to adjust patterns, make changes in the sizing for bust and arms and raise a neckline. Many books that offer 'plus sizes' are just sized up patterns created for smaller figures that don't fit well (like tiny tight tank tops). The sleeveless shell (also has matching cardigan) in this book has wide shoulders that will cover bra straps. And the only sizes in the book are from 1x-4x. It is the first crochet book actually created for plus sizes and I hope they keep them coming. The patterns in this one are basic shapes and classic styles that would look completely different by just changing the yarn, colors etc. so you can make several of each pattern. --fabricyarns dot com

Product Description

Plus-size girls are a group that seems to be neglected in the plethora of crochet books on the market. The author, Margaret Hubert, has often been approached at trade shows and through her classes by women in this size category, begging her to design patterns that would fit them. A plus-size crocheter cannot simply take a smaller pattern and increase the number of stitches or rows to get a garment that fits and flatters. There are lots of proportion considerations when designing patterns for larger sizes. "Plus Size Crochet" has 20 crocheted garments and accessories for plus-size women. The projects are stylish and flattering for various large figure types. There are also hints and tips to help the crocheter accommodate her special needs.

4.0 out of 5 stars all the encouragement I needed, 6 Jan 2009
By Fifi (Scotland) - See all my reviews
My last memory of crochet was helping my Granma unravel wool to crochet square blankets. 30 years later I was randomly searching for decent plus-size knitwear when I stumbled across this book. I liked the look of a couple of the designs and decided to give it a go. I unearthed the address of an ancient auntie and plied her with sherry until she agreed to lend me a crochet hook and remind me how to do the stitches. Amazingly, it is like riding a bike - you never really forget how. I have completed several of the patterns in this book, (really loved the mohair stripey coat and gorgeous wide wrap) and since then have gone on to devour many more crochet/knitting books and it has become a major pleasure, to say nothing of the improvement in my wardrobe. This book was all the encouragement I needed to get creative. I've given it 3 stars for the patterns ( 20 in all, half are great, the other half look pretty ropey even on the models, but that's not a bad ratio as these books go) plus an extra star for sentimental value because I will always remember this book as the one that got me crocheting again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Plus size crochet, 1 May 2009

I have knitting books for the 'larger lady' but this is the first one I've seen for crochet,it contains some very pretty items and plenty of detail about yarns and resizing. It uses mostly american yarns but with the internet this isn't such a problem these days.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lumpy as ever, 11 Aug 2009
By B. E. Maxwell Jones "Liz" (Wales) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As ever somebody has come up with more lumpy baggy big lady designs in thick yarns. Why don't designers realize that unless you live in the arctic depths and need really thick sweaters these lumpy designs just make you look lumpier.Designs in finer yarns are much more flattering even if they take a little longer to do. I have given the book 1 star only because I bought some ribbon yarn in a sale and have been looking for a suitable pattern for its use. In future I will save my money and stick to what I have done before; get out my calculator and do the maths all of which are quite easy in crochet. My advice unless you have seen a copy before don't bother use the money for a new calculator.
