Important Information

Seller Warranty Description
We love our Plugable products and hope you will too. All of our products are backed with a 1-year limited parts and labor warranty and Seattle-based email support.

Product Description

Features future-proof USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 connectivity. Uses the ASMedia 1053E chipset and firmware with UASP support and more for maximum performance and features. Open horizontal docking bay for easy dock/undock of bare/internal SATA drives. Connect a single 3.5" or 2.5" SATA drive (SATA I, II, & III supported) at USB 3.0 SuperSpeed 5Gbps (5Gbps=640MBps), up to 10x as fast as USB 2.0. Fully backwards compatible with USB 2.0 and 1.1 at their native speeds. Real world transfer rate performance over USB 3.0 will vary by computer host controller and drive specifications.

Power Management

Power button for powering off drive when not in use. Drive sleeps automatically on OS power events or 10 minutes of idle.

Compatibility

No drivers required: uses standard USB mass storage class support already provided in Windows XP and later, Mac, and Linux. Dual color LED reports drive activity (blue for power, red for drive activity). For USB 3.0 speeds, dock must be connected to a USB 3.0 port. Supports 6TB+ drives on 64-bit operating systems (use drives less than 2TB for 32-bit Windows). Updated USB 3.0 host controller drivers highly recommended for best performance and stability.

In the box

USB 3.0 to SATA HDD Docking Station (using ASMedia 1053E chipset), 1m/3ft USB 3.0 Cable, 30W 12V 2.5A AC power adapter (UK & EU).

This arrived today.I took it out of the box and connected it up tried to switch it on. The power button disappeared inside the unit! Had to dismantle it to repair the power switch before I could use it. Not what i expect from a premium product. Be warned!

The hard drives connect with the caddy with a reassuring solidity and are well supported all round so that they won't move and break the connection. Win 8.1 immediately found the drive and it was available for use (it was a drive I had upgraded a few months ago and was thus already formatted and partitioned). The speed of transfer is very good, with about 1.75Tb of data copied across in about 5 hours.
So why the four stars? Well on top of the caddy is an On/Off button, which is the biggest weak point of the entire unit. Pressing it in to turn the caddy on is not that easy. It took me about 12 attempts to push the button in far enough to get the caddy to stay on. It feels flimsy, has almost no resistance and goes too far into the caddy for comfort. I will probably, for that reason, never turn the unit off other than at the wall. A shame that such a small part lets down what would otherwise be a brilliant piece of kit.

So an update. After running the caddy with no problem for 11 days, it suddenly dropped off the system. My first reaction was that it was a Win 8.1 problem as other devices have a habit of dropping off line, but I very quickly realised that the caddy was no longer powered. A fault with that oh so flimsy button on top? Actually no, the transformer has given up the ghost. It sits on the floor in a well ventilated position but has failed. 240V definitely reaches it, and 0V is the answer. I like the device so am knocking another star off for reliability and will try another one.

Simple and easy-to-use device and a means to read from, write to, format, check or otherwise work on any SATA hard drive or SSD without the need to mount it in an enclosure. Since, IDE/PATA are no longer manufactured, unless you have some - I do but they are rarely needed or used - it is probable that any recently manufactured or purchased drive will be SATA. I have and occasionally need to use an adapter that allows similar usability but with SATA and IDE/PATA drives in both 2.5 and 3.5 formats (the older drives used different connectors for each size format).

This does take require a fair amount of desktop space as it is a little larger than a 3.5-inch drive, but unless it is to be frequently used, it need not occupy that space and can be put away in a drawer or on a shelf. As its connectors are covered, they are probably less likely to be susceptible to ingress of dust etc that may interfere with the functioning of those adapters where the drive is near vertical and where some or all of the drive access slot(s) area is exposed.

The adapter uses an inline power adapter with a usefully long combined length. The USB lead is of a more modest length, but you can easily use a longer version if essential.

It is easy to use as you only need push in the drive to match up the connectors. A power button is the sole control and a small LED indicates that it is on and working.

A number of other Plugable products, mostly USB 3.0 hubs, have been previously purchased and found always to function reliably, year upon year. There was therefore no hesitation in making this purchase. It should prove to be completely reliable in the long term.

Superb device. It does exactly what it says on the tin. I used it to test a new 3TB SATA III Hard Disk for bad sectors - it was just a matter of connecting it up as per the User Manual and away it went! It recognised the full capacity of the disk without any problems. It seems to be well made, and comes with all the necessary leads and and a power supply.

Great simple solution for making good use of recovered HDD's from old recorders... Had some trouble at first!.. even though my computer recognized it after inserting the Western Digital 500gb Sata HDD which I had removed from a 6yr old Sony Freeview Recorder.. I still could not access it...So after reading a few forums on the Web-Sites to rectify the problem, I came upon this solution which worked for me and will share with you for anyone who like myself thought they had bought a faulty or inadequate device.
1. Click on Control Panel on your computer
2. Click on System Security
3. Click on Create & Format Hard Disk Partitions which puts you onto Disk Management
4. Locate your HDD & Right Click & Delete Volume
5. Do the same as No.4. but this time Click on 'Create Simple Volume' which will reveal the 'New Simple Volume Size
Wizard'
6. Just follow the Wizard's instructions and you will be able to access your extra HDD.
Hope this information is useful to some customers who thought they had bought an unusable bit of technology!...WARNING...This method WILL ERASE ALL FILES that are on your external hard drive!!
