Product Description

Add a network interface to your computer via USB. Common uses include adding wired network support to Chromebooks and Android tablets, improving speeds vs. 10/100 adapters and wireless networks, replacing a broken internal network card, adding a separately routable network interface, and transferring files peer-to-peer over Ethernet. It is not a solution for connecting a USB device like a printer to a network.

Performance

Plug into any USB 2.0 laptop or desktop currently limited to 10/100 Ethernet, and benefit from faster transfers on your Gigabit ethernet network. USB 2.0 supports theoretical speeds up to 480Mbs. In practice, most machines will see up to a doubling of network speed by moving from 100Mbs Fast Ethernet to 1000Mbs Gigabit ethernet via USB. Also works on 10/100 ethernet networks at their native speeds.

Drivers

Microsoft signed 32/64-bit drivers for Windows 7, Vista, XP, 2000, ME, and Win98SE. Not compatible with ARM-based Windows (MS Surface). Mac OS X 10.6+ 32/64-bit requires latest driver via download. Linux kernels prior to 3.3 require rebuild of kernel module from source. Not compatible with Tivo Series 2, or Wii.

Driverless Support

Works using built-in drivers (no install needed) for all Google Chromebook systems running latest updates (Chrome OS), certain Android systems including ASUS Transformer Prime and Infinity convertible tablets, and systems with Linux kernel 3.3 and higher.

Included in Package

USB 2.0 to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter with standard USB type A connector to PC and female RJ45 jack to network, Quick Install Guide, and Driver Disk for Windows and Mac.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Almost" Gigabit Ethernet 12 Dec 2011
By Pete
Until someone comes up with a Thunderbolt-Gigabit-Ethernet Adapter, this one is the fastest, what you can get from USB 2. No, you won't get true Gigabit-Ethernet speed although the adapter advertises itself as a Gigabit-Ethernet port to your switch. The bottleneck is the USB port. I don't blame Plugeable for this. But they should make it clearer, that you won't get real Gigabit-Ethernet speed.

What you get is 300-400 Mbit/s. And that is still 3-4 times faster, than Apples USB-Ethernet adapter and 10 times faster, than the real WLAN throughput of your Mac Book Air. Works perfectly with Lion after installing the latest driver.

Would recommend this as a standard accessory for every Mac Book Air owner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works with asus transformer eee pad 5 May 2012
By chequer
Finally with the latest update to eee pad firmware, it is compatible with ethernet. This device works perfectly with the eee pad, allowing ethernet connection to a usb port. No drivers are required; the device is supported natively by the ics android 4 operating system.

5.0 out of 5 stars It works with my Samsung Series 5 Chromebook 1 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase
My Chromebook is generally much faster than my previous standard laptop, but I was still having difficulty with video freezing, so I bought this device to connect my Chromebook to my wireless router by Ethernet cable.

Since doing the connection, which was a simple plug in, my Chromebook is as fast as ever, but I now also find that where previously I could only watch videos at basic 240 quality, I can now watch at 360 and 480 at a pinch (depending on the video). So I am happy with this purchase and would recommend it to others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and easy to set up 6 Sep 2012
Verified Purchase
I have a Windows 7 machine that the onboard ethernet socket had gone faulty and kept disconnecting me from the router. Although it was new, I didn't want to take it back to the shop and be without it for a number of day. I looked at this product and thought it would do the trick and I was right.

Delivery was quick and it was just a matter of plugging it into an available USB port and running the software on the mini DVD and it was working within 20 minutes!

Would definitely recommend it as it was cheaper than getting a faulty ethernet port repaired.

The only slight problem I had was that my DVD drive was vertical and meant putting it on the side as it was a mini DVD installation disc but brilliant apart from that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast, simple cheap but limited by USB 2.0 6 Sep 2012
Verified Purchase
I wanted a cheap and simple way of upgrading an old laptop with a slower LAN interface. This seemed just the job to link up with my newer Gigabit router. It worked perfectly after installing the drivers and seems entirely reliable. I certainly noticed a good improvement in speed but, as others have said, it is not a true answer for those seeking gigabit speeds as it is ultimately limited by the data transfer rates of USB 2.0.

That said, it did pretty well exactly what I expected and was worth the money to keep my older equipment functioning.
