Product Description

Sustained high-performance, tested long-term reliability and double data protection

The Plextor M5Pro is a professional SSD designed for business and advanced users who demand high performance, reliability, and true data integrity. It uses the latest Marvell 88SS9187 controller and this provides it with random read / write speeds of up to 94,000 / 86,000 IOPS. Even under heavy loads the multi-core controller and exclusive Plextor firmware make the M5Pro extremely fast, reliable and stable.

Multi-Tasking and Ultra-High Performance

The combination of the latest Marvell 88SS9187 controller and the best quality Japanese Toshiba Toggle NAND flash creates M5Pro with enterprise-class performance. It has the ability to consistently deliver random read / write speeds up to 94,000/86,000 IOPS and sequential read / write speeds up to 540 / 450 MB/s. This makes the M5Pro suitable for use in a heavy workstation, server role, or Raid 0 configuration.

True Speed

The drive also makes use of True Speed technology, which prevents the drastic performance drops seen in some SSDs after intense or long-term usage.

CrystalDiskMark Test - Random Read / Write

4K QD32 read / write simulates Windows use, the M5Pro’s high performance makes it perfect for users running windows.

Enterprise-Grade Double-Data Protection

In line with the needs of advanced users for data integrity and confidentiality the M5Pro offers a unique enterprise-grade double-data protection technology. Using latest 128-bit error correction system built into the latest Marvell controller it is able to automatically check and correct the accuracy of data being read from the Flash memory. This is complemented by a second layer of read protection offered by the Robust Data Hold-out algorithm in Plextor’s exclusive firmware, allowing the drive to achieve total data accuracy even in the long-term.

For data confidentiality the M5Pro supports full drive encryption with an Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 256 bit algorithm using its US Government AES-validated Marvell controller.

The combination of the latest Marvell 88SS9187 6Gb/s SATA controller’s powerful 128 Random Bit/2K BCH ECC, the exclusive Plextor firmware and the Robust Data Hold-out Algorithm gives the M5Pro unequaled data integrity.

True Protect

True Protect ensures that data is stored and retrieved without error by using ECCs, Plextor Firmware and Robust Data Hold-out Algorithm.

AES is the U.S. government standard encryption technology, it is divided into three levels 128,192, 256 The Plextor M5Pro uses the highest level of encryption - 256 bits. This level of SSD encryption is highly secure compared to BIOS or software based encryption and offers strong protection if the computer is stolen.

Professional Quality and Reliability

With the M5Pro, Plextor has focused on developing and supplying one of the most stable drives on the market. To achieve this, extensive pre-production testing took place using the world’s most advanced SSD testing facilities - FLEXSTAR testing chamber. It was only when the design was able to pass strict enterprise-grade Zero Error standard of 400 units surviving 500 hours of the toughest continuous testing without a single error or failure that the drive was approved. To ensure stability and reliability for individual drives all drives undergo rigorous high-temperature burn-in tests and accelerated usage simulation testing.

Preproduction tested for professional use in Plextor’s state-of-the-art testing facilities. Rigorous operational and environmental tests resulting in drive with an impressive MTBF of 2.4 million hours.

48hr Sustained Read and Write Test

Two days continuous 4K file read / write test, zero error pass requirement.

4000 Times Idle Test–Sleep and Hibernation Test

After 24 hrs read & write SSD enters sleep (S3) mode and is woken after 5 minutes, repeated for hibernation (S4) mode, zero error pass requirement.

250 Times Power Cycle–Cold and Warm Boot Tests

Continuous cold boot and warm boot cycles 250 times, zero error pass requirement.

Full 5 Year Warranty

The Plextor M5Pro’s high build quality is backed by an iron-clad 5-year warranty from Plextor for total peace of mind. An extensive technical support system will provide support throughout the drive’s long life and make the M5Pro a performance upgrade that you can have total confidence in.

The product was not as shown, but was uncased. Also, there was no 3.5 inch mounting bracket supplied, I don't know if this was an omission or whether it is not, in fact, included. There were no instructions included and as I have not used this type of product before it was a bit trial and error!

Performance in comparison to a conventional HD is far superior. There have been some suggestions that the chipset used in this SSD is not the most robust available, but as there is a 5 year guarantee with the drive, I can't see this being a problem.

Had to return one of these because it started to act bad and freeze entire system.
The second one performs as expected so far.

The Plextor SSD is used as my C drive this gives very fast boot times used with windows 8 & Ivy Bridge 5 processor. The down side is the cost compared to a normal hard drive on the positive it is silent.

I compared almost all of the popular 128GB SSD models before chose this one. It uses the latest Marvell controller and 19 mm Toshiba Nand Flash, both top-notch components. Therefore performance wise it is naturally one of the best on the market today.

The SSD comes with a 3.5 Inch Bracket, so you don't need to buy one if you want to upgrade your desktop PC. But you do need to buy a SATA 6GB/s cable if you don't already have one. The installation process is easy, and you can always check youtube for video guidance.

Here is the problem I had: I formatted the C drive on my old 2TB Seagate HDD, and did a clean installation of windows on the new SSD, which is recommended for people who have both drives running on the same PC. But each time after I completely shut down the PC and turned it on again, the power would be automatically cut just when the manufacturer logo appeared on the screen. So I had to turn it on twice. There was no clear solution to this problem on the internet. I tried all sorts of methods and finally found that I had to disable the windows hibernation function. This would sacrifice some boot time, but it's better than having to boot twice anyways.

Other than that, I have found no problem with the SSD after a month of intensive use. Definitely recommend for any one looking for a high performance upgrade. And I suggest a look at the The SSD Optimization Guide on the SSD Review website, if you'd like to get the most out of your drive.

Bought this as an upgrade to a SATA 2 SSD. Absolutely no problems at all, just transferred my whole system as an image, it worked first time (on a slightly older X58 system) and continues to do so, fuss-free. I'd had trouble with a Sandforce-controlled SSD in the past, this one has a Marvell controller. Subjectively very quick indeed, Windows boots in a few seconds. Happy to recommend this product.

I used Plextor back in the days of CDR's and they were super reliable.
For SSD everyone uses a Samy, but after upgrading from my Samy 128GB to this one i can say go ahead!
Plextor has done amazing work on it's firmware, read some reviews on the net.

Very easy to install, superb value even a few years after release.

Had some Secure Boot related problems with Windows 8 but these were resolved by getting rid of Windows 8.
