Milt Jackson is heard in two sessions. First session by a nine piece group with Cannonball Adderley, Horace Silver, Art Blakey and others, arrangements by Quincy Jones. The second session a sextet date with Joe Newman, Lucky Thompson, Horace Silver among others.
Fine solos by all, Milt Jackson in his usual good form and Adderley, Newman and Thompson equally good, maybe better!

If you want to know what Milt Jackson is about - Get this
Album. Whether In a larger group or in a smaller Sextet
setting, He swings Soulfully.

There is a small technical Glitch during Joe Newman's solo
on the "Stereo" version of 'Boogity Boogity'. He is
barely audible. I managed to splice the Mono segment from
my original copy as an experiment - fairly successfully!
If you are happy with Mono, there should be no such problem.

First heard Milt Jackson at a dinner party, playing seductivly in the background, but gabbing my attention as he played on. This is, to me, a beautiful example of a blend of the best of what Soul and Jazz music is all about. The next day after the party phoned the host, and as a excuse to say thank you I also mentioned what was the music played last night? he laughed and said I was the third person to ask today ! seems Mr Milt Jackson had us all under his spell that night.

Bought this at the same time as Very Tall - Oscar Peterson Trio with Milt Jackson CD (see review) to further increase my appreciation of Milt Jackson. Slight disappointment in that recordings are mono which is not stated when purchased or on CD, but the music is great.

HASH(0x96c9fd14) out of 5 stars Remastered for excellent sound 5 Feb. 2010
By blue skies - Published on Amazon.com

The two reviews above refer to an earlier domestic release. The sound on the 2008 import cd is great!!! If you enjoy Milt's work not to mention the incredible arranging talents of Quincy Jones don't hesitate to get this while you can.

HASH(0x96c9fd68) out of 5 stars Better Sound 1 Dec. 2012
By John M. - Published on Amazon.com

I can confirm that this Import has improved sound quality over the domestic that Mosaic sold me quite a while back. Joe Newman's back on mic for Blues At Twilight. Cannonball's tone is a bit smoother too.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Modern Jazz Quartet, but hearing Milt Jackson outside of that context is always a treat. For one thing he seems looser and the blues side of him comes to the fore. On this album he is backed by some excellent musicians who manage to infuse some swinging arrangements with a healthy dose of soul.

Give the sound samples on the MP3 album a listen at Plenty, Plenty Soul. Even though the sound samples are short you will get a good taste of the music. Do note that while Quincy Jones has arranger credits, his involvement is only on the first three tracks. The final four tracks were actually recorded a few days earlier with a different ensemble.

On tracks 1 through three (the Jones arrangements) Jackson shares the front line with Joe Newman on trumpet, Jimmy Cleveland on trombone, Cannonball Adderley on alto sax (credited as Ronnie Peters for contractual reasons), Frank Foster on tenor sax and Sahib Shihab on baritone sax. The rhythm section is Horace Silver on piano, Percy Heath on bass and Art Blakey on drums. These tracks were recorded at Atlantic's studios in NYC on January 7, 1957.

The remaining tracks were recorded for Atlantic on January 5, 1957 and feature Jackson accompanied by Joe Newman on trumpet, Lucky Thompson on tenor sax and a rhythm section comprised of Silver on piano, Oscar Pettiford on bass and Connie Kay on drums.

One parting thought since I am listening to this album as I write this review: the first three tracks sound like some of the work Charles Mingus was doing in this period. In fact, Mingus may have influenced Jones when he arranged those tracks. I do not know for sure, but am sharing my thoughts.

HASH(0x96ca200c) out of 5 stars Very Very good but poor sound 27 Mar. 2003
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com

After many years looking for Blues at Twilight, appeared on a very good LP called "The Blues in the Modern Jazz", I bought this CD. But I get dissapointed because the poor engineering sound work on transfer this title from LP to CD. As a collector i didn't get angry enough but I miss that LP sound.
Anyway, this Cd has two sessions recorded in 1957.
here are some additional information:
Arranged by Quincy Jones and featuring Cannonball Adderley, Horace Silver, Percy Heath, Art Blakey, and Connie Kay. (See also John Lewis and The Modern Jazz Quartet in this section.)
