4.0 out of 5 stars Oldy but a goody 11 Mar. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
There are far better and more modern books available but always remember that this is free.
I would advise anyone who is not interested in a detailed history and explanation of telescope types to skip the first part of the book but the rest is full of gems.
Author's genuine enthusiasm carries through the book and the stars have not moved far since this was written.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dated but beatifully written. 5 Feb. 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a old classic now available for free on the Kindle.
It is beautifully and descriptively written using the full range of the English language. Much of the information has been superseded now but it is still a very enjoyable read of science in bygone days. I deal for a long journey !
On my download none of the star maps are visible even though there are links. However, the writing style, enthusiasm and general information takes you back to a time long gone - simply lovely to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rewarding classic. 26 April 2015
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Very good reprint of a highly engaging classic. Serviss' descriptions are just lovely, and though over a century old, this book is still very worth reading by modern stargazers. The star charts are not the best by current standards, and don't reproduce particularly well but they do add to the beguiling charm of the book. Serviss is an excellent writer and his fiction is as engaging as his non-fiction. Highly recommended!

3.0 out of 5 stars No pictures 14 Feb. 2012

Haven't read it all yet. Technical details looks very good. Tends to talk inches instead of mm for 'scopes (you'll have to convert)
Where are the star Maps?
