Reviews

At the time of his death in 1992, Frankie Howerd was firmly established as a national comedy treasure, his risque jokes, double entendres and meandering anecdotes having enlivened television schedules over nearly four decades. Some of his most successful shows were produced for ITV, and this set presents six shows transmitted on the network between 1973 and 1991 which reflect an ever-broadening appreciation of his comic genius - from the hugely popular variety shows of the seventies to the enthusiastically received routines on Britain s university campuses during the early nineties, confirming Frankie Howerd s status not only as a comedy icon but a cult hero embraced by a generation of young student aficionados. Featuring guests John Le Mesurier, Sheila Steafel, Kenny Lynch and Norwegian Bond girl Julie Ege, with writing from Johnny Speight, Barry Cryer and Vince Powell, this marvellous collection presents Frankie at his finest.

I am a huge fan of Frankie, but I have to go along with most of the other comments on here - the "Frankie Howerd in Concert" from Yorkshire TV in the 70s is pretty dire. Frankie is trying his best, but it is obvious that something very odd was going on - one sees cutaways of an audience, but the laughter is horribly canned at times. Do we assume that it was not a very receptive audience? I wouldn't be surprised if some of the act had been done without an audience altogether and stitched together with the audience material...it is all very patchy. Who on earth thought it would be a good idea to ask along John Le Mesurier as a guest? Everyone looks so uncomfortable and nothing works.

But the set is worth the price just to have the "Frankie Howerd on Campus" performance - a wonderful document of Frankie at his very best.

As an Adolescent watching Frankie in Up Pompeii I thought he was great and became a fan , however this collection is very hit and miss ,and I recall my Father who also liked him saying he can be very good or very poor ....and these shows reflect this.
I still give it 4 stars as there is more good than poor and to be fair to Frankie he had to do his best with the scripts! Super Frank , Campus and Up Pompeii are the best on offer here , whilst Frankie and Tommy is an interesting documentary , the other offerings are pretty cringe worthy! So as Frankie would say Please Yer Selves!

Great to see FURTHER UP POMPEII from 1991 on this OH PLEASE YOURSELVES dvd. He did 2 shows with the same name, the other FURTHER UP POMPEII from 1976 is on the UP POMPEII collection....if you are wanting that UP POMPEII collection then buy it as part of THE FRANKIE HOWARD COLLECTION which comes with 2 other dvds (best of frankie howard, churchill said to me) in a slipcase....DONT buy the identical UP POMPEII collection seperately as its much more expensive for some reason.

an interesting collection spanning 20 years and interesting to see how crude (and at times not very funny) his 1970s material sounds. The good news is that the titters in the 70s do rise up to deliver some good laughs by the 1980s and even Further Up Pompeii (which was funnier than I remembered watching it on ITV the first time, maybe I get more of the jokes now). For the price worth adding to your collection especially if you're a Frankie Howerd fan (if only to note the contrast over the decades).
