Product Description

CD Description

American Laundromat Records has enlisted a herd of indie-rock luminaries - including The Wedding Present, Built to Spill s Doug Martsch, Throwing Muses co-founder Tanya Donelly, Telekinesis and William Fitzsimmons to contribute covers of 20 classic songs by The Smiths for this new tribute CD. In a fitting touch, the label - which previously has released the compilations Just Like Heaven: A Tribute to The Cure and Dig for Fire: A Tribute to the Pixies - was able to secure a photo of 60s U.K. pop star Sandie Shaw for the cover art; Shaw, of course, was a favorite of both Morrissey and Johnny Marr who, in 1984, covered The Smiths "Hand in Glove." It's an outstanding tribute to The Smiths and highly recommended. 1. Panic Kitten 2. Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before - The Rest 3. What Difference Does It Make? - Joy Zipper 4. Not sure why so many people hate this, there are some GREAT covers on here.
Greg Laswell's 'Half a Person', for one, is a wonderful take on the tune, along with Sara Low's 'Well I Wonder' and gorgeous Tanya Donelly on 'Shoplifters...'.
Great to hear modern versions, by other artists, covering tracks we all know so well.

Come on, give it a chance, as far as the dreary tribute album goes, this is in the top half of those lists :-)

This album has some very good covers on it. The songs are given a modern twist, some artists stay pretty faithful to the original songs feel, some are quite adventurous in their changing of the songs, whilst others go half and half, changing some elements and keeping others. This is not an album for those looking for the energy of the Smiths in their hayday. You'd need to buy a Smiths album for that, but, all in all, the covers here are very good.
