I first came across Scott Turow a few months back when I read
Innocent which I thought was an excellent, well crafted read and which I rated as Five Stars. Hence I started Presumed Guilty with high hopes. However, I can only presume that in the 17 years which have elapsed since the author wrote Presumed Guilty he has learned his craft as I found this book rather hard going.
For me the main issue was that nothing much seemed to happen for a lot of the time and most of the the narrative seemed tangential to the main thrust of the plot. Now I do not have a problem with books which are slow moving, but where the description is well put together - some of my favorite books are like this. The problem here seemed to be that most of the information given was just not very riveting so I eventually found myself skipping through chunks.
At a third of the way through I took stock and reckoned I could have summarised the plot to that point in five lines. The end did not work particularly well for me, but maybe by then I was just pleased to have finished the book.
