Format: Audio CD
This CD brings together Jerome Kern's songs and Andre Previn on solo piano (in jazz mode). The latter demonstrates his playing and arrangement skills at the impressive levels the listener has come to expect from the multi talented Maestro. The recording, made in Feb and March 1959, was remastered 1991. It is clear but does not sound sanitized. All the notes sound warm and the passion for the songs and the arrangements comes through. Previn brings true originality to these well known songs - how easy is it to make Ol'Man River sound fresh? This is one for the collection. 1959 was an outstanding year for jazz with three definitive albums released by Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Dave Brubeck maybe this less well known one this should be added as the fourth. Very cool !

On this CD Previn as soloist plays in a more exuberant jazz style than on some of his other CDs where he is accompanying singers like Doris Day, Dinah Shore or Sylvia McNair. The improvisations are also more flamboyant than when he is partnered by other musicians, like bassist David Finck or when Previn is playing as part of the Trio with Mundell Lowe or Joe Pass on guitar and Ray Brown on bass. On these other discs, Previn blends in with his partners but playing solo piano he can give full rein to his creative imagination. If you enjoy jazz piano inspired by the wonderful melodies of Jerome Kern, then this is a disc for you. Only one minor criticism - as this recording was made in 1959, there are only 10 tracks on the Cd, which makes for quite a short playing time.
