Howard Barker is an internationally renowned dramatist. There has been a recent resurgence of presentations of his plays in Britain, with particularly acclaimed productions at the Arcola and the Hackney Empire. He has a sizable following on the European mainland. Judith tells the story from the Biblical Apocrypha of the Jewish heroine Judith and the conquering Babylonian general Holofernes. (Uncle) Vanya is Barker's take on Chekhov's tragicomic masterpiece, while A House of Correction is set on the eve of a world war. Hurts Given and Received is one of Barker's newest plays, premiered in 2010.
