Book Description

14 July 1988 041318160X 978-0413181602
This volume includes The Seagull, a about the battle for power between a mother and her son which ends in tragedy; Uncle Vanya tells of two obsessive love affairs that lead nowhere, and a flirtation that brings disaster; Three Sisters in which three siblings wrestle with their futures and The Cherry Orchard where the old must inevitably give way to the new. Haunting and elusive, these four great late masterpieces have found in Michael Frayn a translator who perfectly captures their delicate balance of the tragic and the absurd. The volume also contains four of Chekhov's early short 'vaudevilles' as well as a substantial introduction by Michael Frayn."The critical clamour for a Complete Chekhov in Michael Frayn's translation has borne fruit" (Sunday Times)

5.0 out of 5 stars What I think of Czekhov's plays 5 Feb 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
tile; What I think of Czekhov's plays

Although written a hundred years ago, Czekhov's plays have still more to say about real life even now than many other famous works of the same period I like the author's approach to ordinary but endearing characters. I would recommend it not only to the readers of plays but also to readers of novels and short stories. Czekhov was also a short story writer.

Michael Frayn's translastion of Checkov is lively, well presented, and holds on to the comic element of his characters - often lost in the stuffy attitude of the cannon of literature. Uncle Vanya, in this edition is especially good. As you read through the lines of the housekeeper also think Father Ted's Mrs. Doyle. Chekov created this character long before TV was even a concept. Good stuff. By this edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic value! 1 Aug 2010

Book arrived very quickly in brand new condition with only a minute tear on the cover. I needed the script to mark for a production -- it has stood up well and not fallen apart as can happen! Just wish learning it was as easy and hassle free as ordering it!!
Would rate this seller as A+++++ and would certainly both use again and recommend.
