The plays of Anthony Minghella deal with the issues he sees inherent in ordinary relationships between ordinary people. The simplicity of these themes are dealt with, in this collection of plays, in a complex and intriguing way: Minghella has the power to make the mundane extraordinary. For those who know Minghella only for his recent Screenplays- 'The English Patient', 'The Talented Mr Ripley'- this collection is an eye-opener into the true skill of this playwrite. As well as the excellent " Trul, Madly, Deeply" with which readers may be more familiar, this anthology contains "Cigarettes and Chocolate", a short play which uses the simple method of linking a series of monalogues* from each character to explore the depths and insecurities of 5 twenty-soomethings. The protagonist's decision to give up speaking for Lent allows these monologues to appear less contrived than they could have. "Hanging Up' is a simple, two-person play which, in the space of one conversation is a revalation into the paranoia and insecurity of any 'normal' modern romance. All the plays, in various ways, take ordinary subjects and inject them with life and meaning, making this anthology a must-read for any fan of modern Drama. * Incidentally, these monologues are ideal studies for the 'A'Level Theatre Studies Practical Exam
