Book Description

3 Jun 1999 0413713504 978-0413713506
Martin McDonagh's plays have been produced in Galway, Dublin, London and New York. They have created excitement and have won numerous awards. In individual editions the plays have been among Methuen's most popular sellers. 'Martin McDonagh's The Leenane Trilogy, one of the great events of the contemporary Irish theatre' (Irish Times). This volume contains: The Beauty Queen of Leenane - 'McDonagh's writing is pitiless but compassionate: he casts a cold, hard, but understanding eye on relationships made of mistrust, hesitation, resentment and malevolence' (Sunday Times); A Skull in Connemara - 'Here, McDonagh's gift is at its most naked and infectious ...it leaves you giddy with gruesome exhilaration' (Financial Times); The Lonesome West: 'The play combines manic energy and physical violence in a way that is both hilarious and viscerally exciting' (Daily Telegraph)"A star is born, bright and blazing, confident, individual and shockingly accomplished" (Sunday Times)

The Beauty Queen of Leenane - Wonderful; Hilarious and tragic all at the same time. The climax is shocking in the extreme.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 2 Sep 2012
By Nessy76
Format:Paperback
Martin McDonagh is undoubtedly one of the finest dramatists of his generation.
This collection brings together his early work, which while it doesn't quite reach the excellence of "The Pillowman" and "Lieutenant of Inishmore" is perfectly crafted and structured.

Hopefully McDonagh's burgeoning film career won't mean that he is lost to theatre, we simply don't have enough contemporary playwrights this good.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great plays, sloppy formatting 26 Feb 2010
By Larry Gopnik - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The plays themselves are fantastic. The formatting for the Kindle edition, however, leaves something to be desired. Sudden, inexplicable font increases, typos galore, inconsistent margins. This looks like the printed copy was just scanned by OCR and dumped into HTML with nobody bothering to clean up all the errors. Still readable overall, but not easy on the eye. Since this is being called "McDonagh Plays 1 (v.1)" does this mean there's a "McDonagh Plays 1 (v.2)" on the way? If so, I would like the free upgrade. $13.77 is not cheap for an e-book, and at that price you expect a better product.

4.0 out of 5 stars Three Plays by McDonagh 7 Jan 2010
By Robert J. O'Kane - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
These plays are perhaps some of McDonagh's most stunning works to date. This was a great price for a good collection of significant modern plays. The Irish playwrights have stolen the thunder from their British contemporaries. I've seen these on stage and they are breath taking!
