'showcases a wealth of talent amongst Black and Asian communities... often neglected by mainstream publishers.' --Black Pride Magazine

Product Description

A landmark collection of plays for stage, screen and radio. 'My Sister-Wife' by Meera Syal - a taut thriller about two women who discover they are both married to the same man. 'Running Dream' by Trish Cooke - tells the story of three generations of West Indian women with warmth and humour. 'Song for a Sanctuary' by Rukhsana Ahmad - explores the painful dilemma of an Asian woman forced to seek help from a women's refuge. 'Leonora's Dance' by Zindika - four women share the house of a ballet dancer, whose contact with the supernatural lays the ghosts of the past to rest. 'Monsoon' by Maya Chowdhry - this is a poetic account of a young woman's sexual awakening. 'A Hero's Welcome' by Winsome Pinnock - a tale of misplaced loyalty, longing for escape and early love. '...showcases a wealth of talent amongst Black and Asian communities...' - Black Pride Magazine.

this was the first book I found that offered me not only some characters who I could relate to - but also some examples of plays written by black and asian women. I find it really useful for working with pupils at secondary level, especially girls although there are some good parts for boys too especially in Winsome Pinnock's play. And it has the first screenplay by an Asian woman author on BBC, I think, written by Meera Syal, titled 'Her Sister Wife.'

All the plays in this excellent book deserve a wider audience. They reveal an untapped source of literature. There are different voices present in all the texts which seek to speak not only to Black and Asian readers but also to everyone concerned with human relationships.
