This is a high quality piece of plastic and my 5 year old grandson simply loves it and plays with it for hours on end. Although just made by clicking together bits of plastic, it is surprisingly sturdy and unlikely to break easily. Some of the parts could be easily lost and clearly not suitable for the very young. For kids who like pirate stories this is a real gem.
However be warned! Playmobil point out on the box that it needs 1.5 hours of assembly by an adult! If you aren't good with flat pack furniture then this isn't something you should undertake lightly. Trying to piece together what is a very elaborate and sophisticated model on Christmas day while you have a child waiting to play with it is not easy! Once completed, the assembled toy is quite marvelous and is likely to keep most small boys, and girls too, occupied for some time! 1.5 hours? It took me more like three.....

Got this as a Christmas present for a 5 year old. He loved it and got a huge amount of playtime out of it, until they graduated to Lego. Only possible moan is that assembly isn't a five minute process, even for the practically minded, so perhaps make a fun afternoon of it rather than expecting it to fit perfectly into a Christmas day schedule.

Bought for my son's 5 birthday and he absolutely loves it. Cannons and a harpoon that fire, ropes to pull, bits that flip open. It survived a 2 year old attacking it too. Be prepared for a serious build though and make sure you have a slim screwdriver!! The only thing I would criticise is that you can't actually play with the inside of the boat easily. They could do with designing a slide open door so that the pirates can actually use the table, chairs and hammock inside.
