I have and like very much three of Janis's LPs from the mid '70s, from back when I was a teenager in the 80s (bit odd for a lad!) and from which tracks such as 'At Seventeen' majestically and seductively emanated.

Now, in the digital age and with an eye on cost, I wanted to get as many of those tracks, especially the most universally loved ones on a single CD compilation.

I'm not sure now how I came to choose this single disc "Playlist - the very best of Janis Ian", but I did and I have to admit, many of the tracks and versions are a bit disappointing. It might have been the only choice at the time.

It starts with, apparently, Janis first recorded song, from 1967 when Janis was just 13 'Society's Girl' which became a hit after a bit of a struggle with radio-play and re-released, as some of the lyrics were considered taboo.

I'd not heard this song before and the vocals sound quite different, strangely deeper than the beautifully crystal clear and smooth sound she became known for. The breathy classic, 'At Seventeen' a bittersweet commentary on adolescent cruelty won her a Grammy, nudging Linda Ronsdat from the prize.

The next few tracks on this compilation aren't really the Janis Ian I know, being either tracks I don't know and don't particularly care for or are Live versions, that just don't sound as good as the originals. These include duets with Willie Nelson (horrible!) and Dolly Parton, both of which I'm sure would delight many fans but strangely, not me.

However, the 8+ minute 'Searching for America' has Ian back at her best - interesting acoustic guitars and powerfully understated lyrics that build in both resonance and tension and one that gives you the time and depth to get fully enveloped into it.

One of a kind poet and singer 10 Dec. 2013

Janis Ian's music and poetry strikes so close to the heart with the realities of life- heartbreak, love and one about inter-racial relationships , the classic "Society's Child". You would think she was sitting in the very thick of a big city with her guitar playing for a million listeners with all her songs. My words alone can't describe how remarkable her songs and poetry are. She doesn't get the same attention from the media Carole King and Joni Mitchell do, but she ought to. If you love "Society's Child" and "At Seventeen" (Her biggest singles) , You'll love the rest of this collection.

PLAYLIST: WHAT AN ANNOYING CONCEPT! 3 May 2014
By DJ2K - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
When I received this CD, I looked for the booklet to read about the songs and the artists like I usually do, but surprise: I found nothing. Instead, I found the record company's explanation of their new, exciting and wonderful concept: the PLAYLIST SERIES. According to them, it takes a lot of time and effort to select the perfect songs to go into a compilation that makes the perfect playlist, so they are launching this series, introducing it like it was a treasure. What they do not say is that their playlist CDs do not include any information, besides the song list itself. If you want to get the song dates, the names of the lyricists, producers and music composers, the albums from which the songs were taken, in short, if you want to get any information that usually comes with such compilations and that is so valuable to music lovers and collectors, you get a big NOTHING. No photos, no interesting facts about the artist, a total absence of credits to the song composers, players, producers, etc... In their explanation of their fabulous new concept, what this company is asking you to do is insert the CD in your computer drive and go to the internet, in order to retrieve the information yourself. Although I was really annoyed by this, I followed the instructions, put the CD in my computer drive and waited... their link doesn't even work!!! So what's left to get my money's worth? Maybe the very low price of the CD to compensate for the company's laziness? Think again! No significant effort there either... So just what was that record company referring to when they said that it takes a lot of time and effort to make a compilation??? PLAYLIST: A pure insult to the artist, composers, producers, band players, and ultimately, to the consumers. Never again!
