Stimulates thinking AND imagination -- the ultimate toy! 30 April 2012
By shaxper - Published on
Verified Purchase Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
Bought this for my four year old, less out of a desire to provide her with an educational toy, and more to give her something more engaging than most of the other stuff out there. This has pretty much blown her mind. When she's older, this will definitely give her a leg up on understanding basic physics and possibly give her an inclination towards engineering but, for now, this is just endlessly fascinating for her. There's so much to do and, unlike simple toys with electronic bells and whistles, it leaves her with the need to power what's happening with her own imagination. For extra fun, I pulled out her Imaginext action figures, and things just got more exciting from there. She loves the water pump, the lock gates, and the rotary wheel that creates currents. While too young to comprehend why any of this works, she's able to manipulate it all with ease and finds it immensely fascinating.

Setup is not all that complicated. The instructions are terrible (and, in fact, are a generic set that provides you with directions on assembling three different sets -- none of which are this one), but once you figure out that the rubber seal strips go in the grooves of the red connector pieces, all you need to do is look at the box to figure out where everything else goes. Total setup time took less than 10 minutes. You may want to keep the box though because, if you collapse the set into a suitcase, you'll need to set everything up all over again next time you pull the set out.

In terms of messiness, the set holds in water perfectly, but you have to expect that any kid playing with this thing is going to splash. My daughter is notorious for filling the pump with water, taking it out of the set, and then expelling all the water in an area that wasn't designed to take it. We've gone through a lot of paper towels as a result.

In the end, I can't say enough positive things about this toy. It stimulates thinking, imagination, and independent play, lays foundations for future learning, doesn't take long to setup, and collapses into a very space efficient suitcase. I think this is a must-have toy for any child.

Very fun 20 July 2013

Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
This was a lot of fun. The Aquaplay Portable Lockbox is rated 3+, but I supervise the 1- and 3-year old playing with this.

Set up: When you remove the big cardboard wraparound, loose parts fall out of the bottom of the folded lockbox (as there are two large holes in the bottom when it's folded). So keep the cardboard wraparound when you want to have it folded, it will cover the holes so nothing falls out.

2 red stickers go on the car rampart areas, as illustrated in the instructions.

The thin black rubber seals come apart and are individually inserted into the long grooves in the red connectors, 6 rubber seals for the 3 grooves in the 2 connectors. Just peel the sticker backing and carefully stick them into the grooves.

The hardest part for me was locking the red connectors onto the two blue halves to hold everything into place. It took a hard muscling to get the plastic pieces to all click in place and have the portable lockbox held in the open position.

The rest of the accessories are easy to attach and remove.

The pump works, you just need to make sure the water level is high enough, you pump a few times to get the suction working, and then on the upstroke, the pump will gush out some water.

The playset includes two cargo baskets, a boat and and a car, but no people. There are also a pump, two rotating dividers, a bridge, a ramp, three gates, a crane, and a hand water spinner thingie that can make water currents.

You can play with this on the grass, or on a table outside. I first assembled it and the children played with it on the rug, dry, getting a handle on things. Then I put an upside down big storage tote in the bathtub, and placed the aquaplay lockbox on top of that. The girls had a blast filling it with water and playing with it. I had to supervise to make sure water didn't accidentally get out.

To empty it I just took out the little pieces one by one, upended the lockbox, and then set the mostly dry lockbox and pieces on a big rug to dry while the girls played with the pieces dry.

The system is expandable with more aquaplay sets or accessories. I don't know how durable the connectors are after repeated use, but you can buy the red connectors and the rubber seals separately. Since it was so hard to get the connectors in place, and we have the space, I'll just store it open until we use it tomorrow.

Aqua Play No. 516 28 Dec 2012
By Catherine Z - Published on
I purchased this for my toy library, we currently have 170 families. As AquaPlay brand make excellent toys. This is a great toy for my needs as it packs up neatly and is compact which is amazing for AquaPlay.
The only down side is when the two halves join together there are two holes in the bottom for all the pieces to fall out when it is carried around.
This set has just enough pieces to be a toy that families want to borrow.

The play set leaks, and the pump for transporting water does not work. The instructions for set up are awful. Do not waste your money!
