"Eden's unsurpassed creativity shines once again!"--Larissa Ione

An Old Flame

Cassie Armstrong has plenty to atone for. The daughter of the most immoral researcher ever to pick up a scalpel, she's determined to use her own brilliance in genetics to repair the damage her family has done to the paranormals. Especially Dante, the first of the phoenixes, the one they call the Immortal. He's been haunting her dreams since she was a little girl, and she's been trying to ease his pain for almost as long. If only he remembered any of it. . .

Dante doesn't know what Cassie's story is. He almost doesn't care. The minute he sees her, all he can think is mine. But there's more to the pretty little doctor than meets the eye. And Dante isn't the only one to notice. He can't trust her, but he can't stay away--and if he wants to learn her secrets, he's going to have to fight like hell to keep them both alive. . .

This is book 3 in the Phoenix Fire series, but can totally be read as a standalone - not that you won't be rushing to download the first two books, or be nosing about which of the secondary characters is next to get his mate.

Though the blurb tells you pretty much the gist of the tale, it doesn't convey the emotions in it, which in part, reminded me of an old fashioned romantic tale of reincarnated love. I loved how Cassie had loved Dante since she'd first seen him at age 8 and how 21 years later, she finally got her man, or rather, her phoenix. I liked how the author explained that each time Dante died and rose in the beginning, he'd have forgotten much of his past lives, including Cassie, but as time went on, she and what she meant to him had begun to imprint on him, each reincarnation/rebirth strengthening his feelings for her and his memories of her. I also liked that even though Cassie never thought she'd be able to be with Dante, her love had never faltered and that she risked her life time and time again to be able to save him.

The tale wasn't all one of love sort-of-lost, love found, as there were baddies and other paranormals, there was danger and revenge and a megalomaniac, and underneath it all, there was a proper tale, not just one written because paranormals are the in-thing. Because of the way things were between them, and because of the nature of the phoenix, there were misunderstandings and at times neither trusted the other, and both felt betrayed by the other, so that they were at times at total odds, but the way in which Dante showed his love for Cassie, going against his nature, simply because she needed him to trust her, was the best proof of his love she could have asked for.

I love shifters. All of them. Tigers, lions, wolves, wild dogs, bears and of course honey badgers! All!

Until Dante I was a Phoenix virgin but he has broken my cherry. And how!

Cynthia Eden always delivers whether it’s her paranormal or contemporary books. She’s one of my go to authors when I want an easy hot alpha and never disappoints. ‘Playing with Fire’ is the third book in The Phoenix Fire Series, the previous two I have not read but easily read this as a standalone. It’s a steamy, intense, fast paced read with plenty of twists and turns and one of her best works.

Dante is Mr Tall Hot and Brooding, a Phoenix known as The Immortal who rises from the ashes each time he is killed. More often than not he rises without his memories but each and every time he sees Cassie all he can think and feel is MINE even when he has no knowledge of her or himself.

“When I breathe in your scent, I ache.”
“When I kissed you, your taste had me maddened.”
“I look at you, and I think… mine.”

Cassie was 8 years old the first time she saw Dante and he’s been haunting her dreams ever since. When he forgets her it breaks her heart each time, she loves him but their history is long and tangled. A brilliant genetics scientist, Cassie is determined to atone for the atrocities her father committed and help all the paranormals affected by his flawed decisions.

I loved both Dante and Cassie. Cassie is one of the best heroines Ms Eden has written. She has a strength of character and determination that drew me and I found myself empathising with her through the whole book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot stuff! 28 Aug 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
This is the third book in the Phoenix Fire series and just builds on all the previous books . Fans of this author will be delighted to read about these characters who have entertained and thrilled readers since Ms Eden first introduced them. A fabulous plot featuring distinctly creepy government types willing to turn a blind eye to cruel experimentation in order to obtain super soldiers . Paranormals held prisoner for years, tortured and even murdered in order to obtain genetic materials that can be twisted and used to make hybrids. But amongst all this evil and unnecessarily cruel torture one young woman who will stop at nothing to reverse the damage done to so many innocents. Cassie grew up in her fathers laboratories and knows just what a monster he really was. No he wasn't a paranormal but the atrocities and tortures he inflicted all in the name of science stole his humanity. Dr Wyatt didn't care who he hurt and happily used his own children in his experiments but it was his constant torture of the Phoenix Dante that haunts Cassie today. She first met Dante when she was a child and the connection they formed has dominated her life. Every time Dante is killed he rises again but his memories take a little longer to catch up. Cassie tracks him down as she feels that maybe just maybe with his help she can find a cure and save so many who have been infected by her father and his cronies. Dante does vaguely remember Cassie but what he remembers does not sit well and he's unsure if she is really trustworthy. Time unfortunately is running out and Cassie needs to move fast but she's being hunted and needs to keep moving. Cassie has loved Dante for so long but knows his feelings for her are conflicted.
