Being a youngster myself, I did not have the opportunity to listen to this record when it came out. I first heard of it when I was told that I was named after an "old punk song" ('Headache For Michelle'), so I hunted the record down and gave my namesake song a listen. I loved it instantly, so I listened to the rest of the album and was not disappointed.
Now to describe the album. As there are 18 songs, I won't review every song, but the album's highlights. So, onwards.
Opening with the energetic 'We're So Cool', you immediately get a feeling of urgency for a dancefloor to pogo on. A song about an easy relationship ("I don't mind if you want to bring somebody home"). This is my personal favourite on the album.
The next song 'The Love Song' continues this dancing energy, with frontwoman Lesley almost rapping her lines, then slowing down later on to sing the lines "Will you die with me tonight?".
'Repetition', a song about abuse, slows the tempo. Lesley's voice, when being deep and husky in other songs, is sweet while singing about a serious subject. Great stuff.
A big highlight (and my reason for buying this) is 'Headache For Michelle'. Great to chill to. Basically, a song about having a great night and getting wasted, then waking up not feeling so fresh.
The above is just a few tasters. "Playing With A Different Sex" is a great album from the era between punk and new-wave. Every song feels right at home in my music collection.
