Book Description

A fascinating insight into the life and work of Anthony Browne, the current Children's Laureate

Product Description

ANTHONY BROWNE is one of the world's most celebrated creators of picture books, with classics such as Voices in the Park, Willy and Hugh and Gorilla to his name. He has won the Kate Greenaway Medal twice, the Kurt Maschler 'Emil' Award three times, and in 2000 became the first British illustrator to win the Hans Christian Andersen Award.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to children's literature, he was appointed the UK Children's Laureate for 2009 to 2011 and to celebrate both this honour and his glorious career, we present a major retrospective of his life and work. Anthony shares insights into his childhood, his training, and his career as an artist, in this captivating memoir featuring over 200 illustrations.

I've been a fan of Anthony Browne's books for decades, having read them with my own child and watched children in schools pour over the illustrations, spotting something new every time. Anthony Browne's gentle, almost sparce, storytelling works beautifully with his artwork which, at first glance, also appears simple. And yet, in short order one starts to see the multiplicity of layers, the visual jokes, the surrealism, the homage to other works, other artists. The best is when the child on your lap spots one of these for the first time. And every book is different. Often unusual. Always entertaining.

I really enjoyed reading this autobiography (co-written with his son, Joe) as he tells the story of his journey from medical illustrator - (yes, really - his first job was illustrating medical procedures in the operating theatre) to international acclaim as a children's book illustrator and UK Children's Laureate. He also explains why he often uses chimps and apes as characters.

Simply told, and peppered with family photos and illustrations from his books, I thought this was fascinating. A lovely gift for anyone interested in children's illustration.

I got this book to help me critique anthony brownes work as part of an English essay at uni. This book helped tremendously as Browne talks about his books specifically and clearly as well as detailing his life. ANY BOOK BY ANTHONY BROWNE is worth several reads! this is no exception.
