Amazon.co.uk Review

Keyboardist and programmer Friedman goes in search of Secret Rhythms with former Can drummer Liebezeit. Burnt's seductive solo albums (Con Ritmo, Plays Love Songs) and his work in the Flanger duo have already been marking him out as a major force in what we'll have to call organic jazz-electro-Latin-funk. His own Nonplace label is also the home of innovative packaging. This album boasts a monstrously powerful sound, sleek and shiny in its details. Liebezeit's current drumming style is stripped down to a metronome action, shorn of all needless embellishment. Coupled with Friedman's bulging basslines, Jaki's cyclic patterns alternate between one-track obsession and cut-up stumbling, toying with the in-between spaces. His clipped snare and all-pervading bass drum fuel the funk, getting heaviest on the dub reggae mutation of "Rastafahndung". Morten Gronvad's vibraphone also plays a crucial role, particularly on the Indonesian gamelan shimmer of "Rechter Winkel", while guitarist Josef Suchy completes the line-up, chopping out his pock-marked wah-wah fills. A triple remix set closes the disc, merging into a single entity, the final "Obscured By 5" vividly incorporating street noises as it bubbles along like a melting rubber snake.--Martin Longley

Not quite what I expected from Liebezeit, having come straight to this from Can's Tago Mago, but intriguing nonetheless. At first listen, a lot of 'Secret Rythmns' sounds a little random and meandering, but after a few listens, the jerky, disjointed rythmns begin to come together, and start being being both soothing and beguiling. I've been listening to it at work, and the days have really flown past! Definitely recommended.

Burnt Friedman & Jaki Liebezeit - Secret Rhythms 22 Feb 2011
By scoundrel - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Some quiet electronic jazziness with live drumming, courtesy of Burnt Friedman and Jaki Liebezeit. "Rhein Rauf," the first track, exemplifies what's to come on the rest of the album, Secret Rhythms. "Shades of Soddin' Orion" has some ominous guitar strums with little percussive plops. The trifecta of "Obscured by 5," the remix by Nonplace Urban Field (Friedman himself), and the extended version have a cumulative effect - - the extended version, especially, wraps things up nicely, utilizing the silence between the drums. Overall, however, the album drifts by a little too easily, without really grabbing one's attention. A bit more focus for the next collaboration might be in order.
burnt not fried 13 Mar 2003
By M. Miller - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
burnt friedman continues to thrill. he is single handedly defining electronic head music with a human touch. his brand of mixing "real" instrumentation with science has no equal. the Scape label is on the right track but as yet, no one has friedman's compositional skill. the laid back grooves are there but always accompanied by shifting points of interest. after releasing "Love Songs" & its stupid voice snippets, friedman returns with this instrumental gem that comes close to the heights reached on "Just Landed". liebezeit supplies his unmistakable crispy drumming. bf...please make more.
Simply brilliant 2 Feb 2003
By Gus - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This album has an extremely cool touch. Of all the chilling albums in my collection these days, this one is number one. If you are looking for a slow, cool chilling sound this album is a must buy. Matching the complex improvisational elements of electronic music with accessibly warm acoustic instruments. The German guru Burnt Friedman is becoming one of the most respected musicians of his generation across Europe. On each project Burnt gets some of the bests to work with. For this album, he's teamed up with legendary Can drummer Jaki Liebezeit. 5 thumbs up!
