Book Description

When unemployed loner, Simon Lansdale, is recruited as a medical research guinea pig by the beautiful, enigmatic Dr Isabella Prentice, he has no idea his mundane life is about to change forever. Dr Prentice is an eminent psychiatrist testing a top secret computer program designed to improve the quality of life for patients held in secure hospitals. Isabella’s computer program generates amazing virtual worlds that are indistinguishable from real life. They are exciting, often violent, sometimes funny, always disturbing and incredibly addictive. Simon has many strange adventures including revisiting traumatic times in his past life, incompetently leading a band of Norman mercenaries into battle and even more incompetently trying to avoid being shot down by the Red Baron in the war torn skies of World War I France. Many of his experiences leave him wondering whether to call it a day for the sake of his sanity but reality is excruciatingly tedious by comparison, added to which the strong sexual attraction he feels for Isabella keeps the besotted, gullible fool coming back for more. To survive, he must decide what is real and what is computer generated and defeat Eric Prendergast, Isabella’s most deranged patient and a man who is destined to become Simon’s worst nightmare.

More About the Author

Originally from Manchester, I now live on a smallholding in West Wales with my wife Janet. We have a few animals and two horses that we hack out regularly in local forests. Having worked in a number of industries for over forty years, I decided to take early retirement and spend more time on my writing. Playing Mind Games is the result although it ended up nothing like my many draft outlines. I kept returning to it and then taking the plot in other directions. I enjoyed writing it and hope anyone who reads it will find it entertaining and have a bit of a laugh along the way.

I thought this book was going to be just another take on the 'Quantum Leap' idea but actually it's much more complex and multi layered than that. In fact this is one of the most original and imaginative books I've read in a long time. The author plays mind games with the reader as well as with his characters and keeps it up right to the last page. A thoroughly intriguing read - well written and genuinely funny in parts. I'm really looking forward to the next book by this promising new author.

This book kept me wanting to know what was going to happen next to the main character. The author has a brilliant imagination and I thoroughly enjoyed each scenario which sometimes made me laugh out loud! Loved the reference to Oswaldtwistle where I was brought up. A brilliant first novel and I look forward to reading more from this author.

The story teller (author) has a vivid imagination and leads me to believe that he is an ardent games player. The story is full of violence and sexual innuendo.
Further comments would spoil the read. Well worth sticking with the story to its coclusion.
