'White aptly describes the world of learning through play outdoors for children. The book covers a variety of modes of play, from water play to creative play to movement.'CHOICE, September 2008, Vol. 46 No. 01

'An excellent reference on good practice that its readers will turn to again and again... implementing suggestions in this book could enhance both the joy of childhood and the emotional, social, physical and cognitive development of children' - American Journal of Play

There is now a growing appreciation of the importance and value of learning through play outdoors.

I have to admit I was delighted when I read this book to discover that it was not covering old ground with regard to outdoor play and learning. Jan White is a "pracademic" who combines practical experience within an academic job. This book covers the practical elements of an outdoor area, for example, the maintenance aspects of having an outdoor sandpit. This is frequently overlooked by many outdoor play books. It is also a much quicker read than I expected it to be. The black and white photos do not make the book as attractive as some but in this case the quality of the advice and commentary makes this a very good buy. If you are on a tight budget this book is good value for money.
