Book Description

16 Sep 2002
Holly Colshannon is a young journalist who thinks her career is about to take a terminal nosedive when she is moved from covering 'pet deaths' for her local Bristol paper and made Crime Correspondent - a poisoned chalice if ever there was one. However, a brilliant idea from the new police PR officer sees Holly shadowing a detective and writing a diary column about his working life. Detective James Sabine is bit of a sour puss - although he does have very nice green eyes - and he's furious that he has been landed with magnificently accident-prone Holly especially since her arrival comes six weeks before his wedding to faultless Fleur. Holly, however, has a career to think about and this infuriating man is not going to stand in her way. Meanwhile, her bosses at the newspaper realise that the column is proving extremely popular with the readers who are waiting for something romantic to happen between the handsome detective and the nice young reporter. With only days to go to the wedding Holly realises she's been waiting for the same thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars The funniest book I have read 5 May 2003
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Playing James by Sarah Mason is very funny from the very first page. The characters are all quirky and likeable. I could not put this book down and apart from Jill Mansell this is the only book I have laughed out loud at too many times to count. I hope Sarah continues to write such witty books in the future. I for one am looking forward to her next one.

I purchased this book based upon its winning of the Parker romantic novel of the year. I have sometimes found that choosing top listed titles has led to personal disappointment but this time around I was truly enchanted from start to finish. The story line does stay on the path of the predictable but there are enough twists and turns along the way to keep things very interesting. And the character development is deliciously robust. This one has should be made into a major motion picture quality and I highly suggest that if you want a boy meets girl read to throw yourself into, Playing James should be at the top of your list!

4.0 out of 5 stars Playing James: a romping read 20 Sep 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This will be a brief review but a good one! I read this book yesterday in (almost) one sitting, being gripped from the start by the daring but hilarious opening which made me laugh out loud! As I was on a tedious coach journey back to Uni in Manchester I was quite embarrassed by my own snorting laughter! The story follows a winning formula: endearing, offbeat heroine with eccentric pet (in this case not a scruffy dog but a temperamental sports car!),loopy friend and love interest hero disguised as dour and disagreeable career policeman who is of course, rather sexy! This is original stuff though, the characters are believable, the dialogue natural, and you want Holly to get her man! This is a very funny writer and I want to read more please!
