Book Description

1 Nov 2013

Whatever art you practice, chances are you’re going to come across image transfer techniques. These valuable techniques allow you to reproduce a unique image from any source and apply it to a myriad of surfaces. The options are endless!
Playing with Image Transfers is a beautiful and helpful resource that will teach you the four image transfer methods: Packing Tape, Solvent, Medium, and Acrylic transfers, while highlighting basic methods and offering projects across a range of interests and applications. You’ll learn how to make beautiful items, including gift boxes, albums, sketchbook covers, wall art, accordion books, and much more. Once you’ve mastered the techniques, you’ll also explore multiple surfaces as a base for transferring – wood, fabric, paper, canvas, and book forms. A beautiful gallery will show the use of image transfers in a wide variety of high-end artistic works to get your creative juices flowing.
The “Considerations” in each chapter offer suggestions on how a single project can be expanded or further adapted if you’re looking to challenge yourself past the basics. By the time you finish this informative book, you’ll be well-equipped to use your own images in your creative work.

About the Author

Maker extraordinaire, COURTNEY CERRUTI sees books as objects to be read and re-purposed, candy wrappers as paper flower petals, toilet paper tubes as a menagerie of animals. She sees the potential in the discarded, history in the mundane and art in the everyday. She saves everything, makes anything and teaches from a place of passion and authenticity. Courtney believes everyone is creative and she’d rather spend an evening drinking tea and painting than doing anything else (except maybe scavenging treasures abroad).
Courtney teaches at the San Francisco Center for the Book, Press: Works on Paper as well as other guest locations in the SF Bay Area and online at Creativebug.com. She studied painting at UC Santa Cruz and the University of Bordeaux in Bordeaux, France where she had her first exhibition and hosted many book making parties! In addition to teaching, Courtney is a freelance artist. She makes something every day and works mostly doing windows, wedding installations and set design. In a previous life she did windows and display at Anthropologie as well as teaching and working at Paper Source.

This book is beautiful from the word go! It will get you digging around your draws for old photos, flicking through magazines and newspapers and planning trips to your nearest photocopier.

With simple, clear and beautiful instruction in no time it's easy to see how this could become a healthy, creative obsession. I can't wait to be creating some gorgeous gifts and treasures to give to friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and accessible art 11 Nov 2013
By Brian D Soland - Published on Amazon.com
I'm not an artist, but I was able to make art within a half hour of opening this book. I was floored and it was truly inspirational. This book provides clear, concise steps for creating image transfers and gives tips on how to make art using newspapers, magazines or your own laser printouts. When I was working on my first project, my two housemates came home and within minutes they were trying out the techniques themselves. I'd recommend this book to friends who like crafts, scrapbookers, collage makers, parents who want to do art with their children, or even people like me who don't know much about art and still want to try creating something really cool.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have 14 Nov 2013
By Sanjai Moses - Published on Amazon.com

This book is so well layed out. I am a high school teacher and plan to use the projects with my students. The directions are accessible and clear making for a super fun afternoon with teens. I love Courtney's creativity and really appreciate the templates in the back of the book. Her homage to artists that use image transfer in their work is spectacular and so inspiring. Whether you are an artist or just like to look at books about artsy projects-this is a must have.

Hi - This is an EXCITING BOOK! Courtney gives GREAT examples of image transfers with carefully detailed steps and supply lists. Every method has notes to go along with the process in addition to the photos and instructions. I ordered one for me and one for a friend and when I got mine yesterday I want to start! I can't wait to get all the supplies together to start my image transfer gallery!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous resource! 12 Nov 2013

I just received this book, and I can already tell it's going to be a fabulous resource for image transfer techniques. The book includes detailed descriptions (with clear photographs) of a variety of transfer methods. I'm always on the lookout for tips on how to make image transfers work (I still have a devil of a time with gel-medium transfers), and this book has lots of them, plus a terrific section with projects and ideas. All in a beautifully presented book full of gorgeous artwork.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and inspiring 21 Nov 2013
By Cherie M Lockwood - Published on Amazon.com
I love this book! It's absolutely beautiful and inspiring. Courtney creates such amazing artwork and she makes image transfers seem possible for anyone by really breaking it all down in this book. The photos are so gorgeous and I love the layout of the book. It starts with great information about all the materials you will need, then provides step by step instructions for 5 different methods of image transferring. There are a ton of great project ideas, plus examples of incredible art from other artists and templates you can use to recreate the projects in the book. It's great that you can start with one of the more simple projects with materials that you already have at home, like packing tape. I also love that this book has so much personality - it's informative, but not at all like a textbook - it's like taking a class with Courtney herself. After going through this book, I immediately wanted to get started on several projects! I highly recommend this book if you are interested in image transfers!
