Product Description

CD Description

"Playing for Change" began a decade ago, the brainchild of Grammy-winning music producer and engineer Mark Johnson. "I was in a subway in New York on my way to work, and I heard these two monks playing music", he recalls. "They were painted head to toe, all white, wearing robes. One was playing a nylon guitar, and the other was singing in a language I didn't understand. There were about 200 people who stopped to watch, didn't even get on the train. Some had tears in their eyes. And it occurred to me that here is a group of people that would normally run by each other, but instead they're coming together. And it's the music that brought them together". For ten years Johnson and his team traveled the globe, with a single-minded passion to record little-known musicians for what would become Playing for Change--its name evoking the coins thrown to street musicians as well as the transformation their music inspires. They went to New Orleans shortly after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. "The city felt sad and desolate, yet the music never stopped", says Johnson. "The street musicians and music in the clubs kept the city alive and gave it a sense of hope". When they visited South Africa and witnessed its growing pains in the aftermath of apartheid, "we saw that people marching down streets singing in groups of thousands did more to effect positive change than any weapons ever could".

Bill Moyers called it a remarkable example of "the simple yet transformative power of music... to touch something in each of us". Variety acknowledged it as "a great showcase for just what incredible, thoroughly accessible popular music is being made worldwide. Utilising innovative mobile audio/video techniques, "Playing for Change" (PFC) records musicians outdoors in cities and townships worldwide. They've travelled from post-Katrina New Orleans to post-apartheid South Africa, from the remote beauty of the Himalayas to the religious diversity of Jerusalem. Their talents are captured in myriad environments: under the sun and beneath the streetlights... in public parks, plazas and promenades... in doorways, on cobblestone streets, amid hilly pueblos. Their performances are subsequently combined in allowing them to collaborate - albeit separated by hundreds, or even thousands, of miles.

Saw these guys at Glastonbury and was totally blown away. They were on the jazz stage when Bruce was playing the Pyramid Stage so the audience was small - a real shame as they deserved much more. Grandpa Eliots performance of Amazing Grace (not on this cd) was my festival highlight, as was the band's version of Billie Jean - a great tribute to Michael Jackson. The CD and DVD lived up to my expectations following the live performance and I've had it on the CD ever since I got back from Glastonbury. The DVD in particular is very inspiring and I want to arrange something in my own area to carry on promoting the music. Get hold of this cd. You wont be disappointed. Great voices and instruments from all over the world combined with great love and attention to detail.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Power of Music 27 Jun 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The cd and dvd album (1 disk of each) has a collection of mostly-unknown musicians playing their parts to some standard classics. Most are street musicians - buskers - but there are more famous names also, none more so than the ubiquitous Bono!
Some of these performers are in pretty dire straits, socially, but they give their impressive all to this music.
The message of the album is the transformative power of music, the essential togetherness of mankind.
As a musical experience, it is very good, as a symbol of hope in a troubled world, it is worth its weight in gold.
I'd buy it - I did - and see what it can do for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Playing for change 4 Nov 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
When I first saw the video of this music, I was smitten. All the performers apart from Keb Mo and Bono were unknown to me beforehand but what a fantastic bunch of performers, all of them. The music they make is giving me, my family and anyone else who hears it, great pleasure.
This project must be supported and I look forward to hearing and seeing more of this project.
Only criticism is that the video is too short and all the songs could have been on it!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Times Review 20 Jun 2009
Format:Audio CD
Already an American Top 10 and YouTube hit, Mark Johnson's project has taken the engineer a decade, as he travelled the world finding musicians and singers (some buskers, some well known, eg Bono) to add a lick or a chorus as he built composite versions of ten familiar songs. Surprisingly, it works brilliantly
