Product Description

Product Description

London in the 1960s, and the city is swinging - what could be more exciting than being eighteen? But there is a dark side to Soho. . . Angie is eighteen years old, and, with the help of a mini skirt, a pair of false eyelashes and a tube of pale pink lipstick, has made herself into a beauty. She's living in London in the Swinging Sixties, and knows she's in the best city in the world at the best possible time. She's got that world at her pretty, white-booted feet as she dances the night away with every handsome bloke on the booming, strobe-lit floor of the Canvas Club. She's heard all the scare stories of course, about what drink, drugs and discotheques can do to young girls, but Angie knows she's different. After all, she's only playing around. But that was before that rainy night, when Angie got into the big, shiny car, leaving her friend Jackie in Soho to find her own way home.

From the Back Cover

London in the Swinging Sixties

When Angie Knight transforms herself into a mini-skirted dolly bird, it's an escape from life with her bone idle mother in the East End. Angie soon has the world at her pretty, white-booted feet as she dances the night away in Soho's strobe-lit Canvas Club with her best friend, Jackie.

She's heard all about the dangers of Soho, of course, but what can go wrong? They're only playing around.

Until club owner David Fuller sets his sights on Angie and, on a dark rainy night, she climbs alone into his big, shiny car...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not ground-breaking but a really good read, 3 July 2009

This review is from: Playing Around (Paperback)
A really enjoyable read following the transformation of a 17 year old girl. A kind of rites of passage story with some great characters, although few surprises. It's the events that make this a good read as we follow Angela on her journey, although there are few really memorable, stand-out moments. Enjoyable to read but a bit forgettable after a while.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 22 May 2006

This book starts off great with brilliant strong characters and the way their lives go - its really exciting and you cant wait to see what happens but then you get to the end - and it's so flat! There doesnt seem to be a conclusion to any of the various characters lives you have just lived.

I was very disappointed after a great start and middle to the near end.

4.0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this book by Gilda O'Neill, 20 Oct 2002
This review is from: Playing Around (Paperback)
I enjoyed this book by Gilda O'Neill, I liked the descriptions of the places and as I was reading I thought the plot was very good and fast moving. I imagined the characters very well and as I read they were in my imagination.
Angie as the title suggested was PLAYING AROUND but she learnt the hard way.
I would like a sequel to this book about Jackie and Angie; I think Gilda is a very good writer and anyone who has not read this book I recommend them to do so.
