The Playboater's Handbook 2 follows up on the best-selling success of the original Handbook with a completely updated look at freestyle kayaking technique. Drawing from the experience and knowledge of World Champion freestyle kayaker and instructional guru, Ken Whiting, this master reference includes almost three times as many moves as the first edition. Whether you're looking to catch your first wave, or are searching for the secrets to the most advanced play-moves like the aerial loop or Tricky Whu, this book will open up the world of freestyle kayaking to every paddler. The Playboater's Handbook 2 covers the full scope of freestyle kayaking with the help of a number of other elite freestyle paddlers, including Corran Addison, Steve Fisher and Tyler Curtis.

4.0 out of 5 stars How to pull moves and show off to people, 23 Oct 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Playboater's Handbook: 2: The Ultimate Guide to Freestyle Kayaking (Paperback)
This is probably the best guide to freestyle paddling out there at the moment. The book takes you from very elementary stuff like surfing in control and builds up to the newest hardest moves. The book is broken down into three main sections, flatwater, waves and holes, and each section advances through the moves in a logical progression.
Ken doesn't seem afraid to hand over the descriptions to other top paddlers who have invented some of the latest move, e.g. Handing the getting air section to Corran Addison (of Riot) however this does lead to some descriptions feeling less full than others, such as Steve Fisher on the Helix (ripped straight from his website). However anyone contemplating these moves probably doesn't need too much in the way of guidelines.
Overall I loved the clear colour photos which are used in sequence to show all the stages of the moves. For the improving playboater (such as myself) this guide was an excellent read and hopefully will lead to less time being spent upside down on a cold river and more time having fun. If I have a criticism is that the descriptions and photos show perfect waves and holes from some of the best locations in the world, that are rarely (if ever) found in the UK. It can be hard to relate the book to the usual small features found on your average UK river.

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS A MUST BUY/MUST READ, 21 Mar 2003
By Steve Metcalf - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Playboater's Handbook: 2: The Ultimate Guide to Freestyle Kayaking (Paperback)
This new book takes the mystery out of moves I thought were WAY above me. THANK YOU KEN WHITING!

No one else besides Whiting has been able to disect, interpret, and present kayaking in such an informative and easy-to-understand way. It might sound melodramatic to say that this book changed my life, but it did. And if you're life's passion is playboating, your perception of paddling--after you read this book--will change forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ken has a knack for clarity, 24 July 2011

This review is from: The Playboater's Handbook: 2: The Ultimate Guide to Freestyle Kayaking (Paperback)
I bought the Ken Whiting "Playboater's Handbook II" book together with his "Playboating with Ken Whiting" video. Individually, each contains excellent explanations and visual illustrations. Together they constitute the clearest and most comprehensive whitewater kayak control training material I have found.

5.0 out of 5 stars GET GET GET, 21 Mar 2003

I lucked into this one--got it from a friend who had a few copies from the Ottawa River Rodeo. All I can say, after getting half way through, is that I've been out in my boat more than my skis. I can't seem to stay out of the water. As we say in Washington, "our ski team has a kayaking problem."

It's tough when you can boat all year to put the booties away...Ken's new book definitely feeds the addiction. Keep up the good work Mr. Whiting, er, uh Sir Whiting. Washington thanks you.
