I was sceptical, as the game came across as looking quite gimmicky, and was even more unsure after playing the demo. However, I took the risk and bought the game, and I was extremely happy with my purchase!
The game consists of many different mini-game style events, three of which involve weapons, two involve projectiles:
Weapon based games:
Survival: You have to survive three increasingly difficult waves of enemies. This is a very basic game mode, but is extremely fun, especially when it gets a bit more challenging.
Rescue: Your aim is to collect a number of little baby alien things, and take them back to the mother, while fighting off enemies. Also a lot of fun!
Guardian: You must protect three cages from enemies who will be trying to attack them. You "repair" the cages by standing near them. This can be frustrating, and is probably my least favourite game mode, but it is still fun and challenging!
Projectile based games:
Jailbreak: Your aim is to destroy a number of floating prisons within the time limit. Can be a little frustrating, but works well.
Countdown: You must shatter and then gather crystals to launch rockets.
The weapons are all very different and interesting. Jak, Ratchet and Sly get to use their respective melee weapon, as well as a lightning whip and a bowling ball, whereas Daxter, Clank and Bentley are armed with either a gun or a frisbee-like disc.
Weapons:
Melee: The melee weapons handle well. Jak uses a staff, Ratchet uses his omniwrench and Sly uses his cane. Movement is controlled with the PlayStation Move controller with one-to-one movement. By swinging the move controller quickly, the character attacks in that direction, and by holding the trigger button while swinging, a bigger, more powerful move can be used. This weapon handles well, and is very innovative to use.
Whip: This weapon is extremely well designed for the move. By making a "whipping" action, the whip is cracked in the direction aimed. By holding the whip over your shoulder (tipping the controller backwards) the whip can be charged up for a larger, more powerful and often explosive hit. The whip handles well with the Move controller.
Guns: There are three different guns, depending on the challenge undertaken. These include the Combuster (a long range pistol), the Red Morphgun from Jak and Daxter (a short range shotgun weapon) and the Bouncer, a grenade launcher. The T button is used to fire, with the Move controller being used to aim. While this generally works well, sometimes the aiming gets a little bit complicated, especially when you have your back against a wall and for some reason you have to aim the controller upwards for the character to aim straight forwards.
Projectiles:
Bowling Ball: Pretty self explanatory, except that after releasing the ball, you still have full control over its direction, and can even make it jump over obstacles. The steering of the ball is easy to get used to, and fun to try and master.
Disc: I find this the most difficult weapon to use. You throw the disc, and must steer it through the air in a similar way to the bowling ball. By twisting the controller, you can rotate the disc, so you can fly vertically if the situation demands it! However, very often you find yourself crashing straight away, and running out of discs very early in the game.
Each character plays very differently. Each has different movements, so Sly runs as though he is sneaking around, whereas Ratchet, for example, walks heroically, and Jak runs along in the way that Jak does! The same goes for the sidekicks; Daxter sort of scampers around, Clank walks more carefully, and Bentley floats around.
Each character also has a special ability that can be used when enough crystals have been collected.
Ratchet throws the Groovitron, making all nearby enemies dance (or in bowling, increases the size of the ball).
Sly activates Thief Time, which slows down time, which when bowling also slows down the ball, giving you more precision.
Jak activates Dark Jak, sending out bolts of lightning at enemies (or in bowling, the ball shoots out lightning at targets).
Clank summons the Zoni, who shoot incoming enemies, or who follow the disc, shooting targets.
Bentley uses Auto-Hack, which forces enemies to attack each other (very useful on the Guardian game mode, as enemies then stop attacking the cages), or reveals the location of targets when playing disc-throw.
Daxter turns into Dark Daxter, and becomes a spinning whirlwind that you can direct around towards enemies, or when using the disc, the disc shoots out lightning.
The locations are lovingly recreated, resembling the different home-locations of each of the hero groups. The levels are very different to the locations they are based on, however, as each has been "recreated" on floating rocks, so that they are small enclosed arenas. I am personally most familiar with the Jak and Daxter series, and it is nice to see four familiar locations from Haven City recreated in such a unique way.
Another aspect of the game that I'm enjoying is the cutscenes. It is great to see the characters all together, and especially nice to see Sly and Bentley, and even more so, Jak and Daxter. Jak and Daxter are so well suited to the PlayStation 3 graphics and high-definition that it makes me sad that there is currently no news of a Jak and Daxter game coming to the PS3.
Overall, the game is fantastic, the best Move game I've played so far, and an absolute treat for anyone who is a fan of even one of the three root games.
