Product Description

Manufacturer's Description
While inheriting the basic functions and design philosophy of the current PlayStation 2, the internal design architecture of this newly redesigned PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system model has been completely overhauled. Slimmer and more lightweight, its internal volume has been reduced by 75 percent, overall weight has been halved and the thickness trimmed down to 2.8cm (thickness of current model is 7.8cm). Its size is almost as small as a hardcover book, making it easier to carry around. Equipped with both a modem port and an integrated Ethernet port for network gaming, the new PlayStation 2 sets new standards in the fusion of design and functionality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Little cracker!, 24 Jun 2005
By thejoneseys (Somewhere out there, in the vast nothingness of space) - See all my reviews
Having been a loyal xbox owner for over 2 years I couldn't help but fall in love with this when I saw it on the high street,

I resisted the temptation to buy there and then, and instead I ordered it from amazon (with the matching silver memory card).

Well all I can say is I love it! The controllers are more comfortable than I remember, and stood next to the xbox it really shows how remarkable this piece of engineering is! It's tiny!

Some people are claiming that this unit doesn't have a fan! Well I was surprised to find that is DOES but it only cuts in when the unit reaches a certain temperature. I'm not sure if this is the same for all variants, but certainly is for mine (SCPH 70003SS). The vents above the rear ports give the game away.

I know the PS2 is now old technology, but I have a few old psone games I really want to play again (like tempest for instance). Not to mention I can now play those other PS2 exclusive titles that I was missing out on before!

Well worth the money I think, plus it looks great in a contemporary living room!

5.0 out of 5 stars Why buy anything else?, 21 Nov 2006

Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
In my books, this has to be one of the best consoles I've used yet. As an upgrade from the original PS2, the difference is amazing and I'm glad I chose this.
Actually, I had a PS2 a few years back, but I've tried all the consoles since then, and nothing compared to the fun I got of the PS2. Luckily, I had my very old PSX tucked away somewhere, so I've been using that. And the great thing about this upgrade is that you not only get the enjoyment out of current PS2 titles, but older PSX games as well. I know, not a new feature, since the original PS2 did this, but it's still valuable, considering there are so many great PSX titles.
If you think the box the console comes in is small, you should see inside. I'll admit, its been packaged very economically - no space wasted, so putting everything back in will be a laugh one day (should the day come!). But I couldnt believe how small the console was - just 9" by 6", and 1" thick! About the size of a short novel, or a bit larger than a DVD case. Theirs fewer vents though - just a couple of slots at the back, and at the front. The controller is improved too - the buttons have a matt surface which are no slip and very comfy, as with the silver plastic. The analog sticks are much better quality too, and the controller actually feels lighter. The only thing I would say is that the lid does feel very flimsy, but I don't intend of giving it a rough time, so I don't worry about it.
Their is no On/Off button at the back like the old PS2, so its just a case of pulling out the thinner AC cord when your not using the console for a long time, or you put it on Standy when your taking a break. Upon switching it on, their are a few software changes, but nothing worth celebrating, unless you get excited of a new "PS2" logo when you switch it on for the first time. Somehow, mine new the time and date without having to set it.. can't explain that yet! You'll need a memory card to save your systems settings by the way.
So what else has changed? Theirs the infa red port built in for the DVD player - no need for the adapter. The disc lid of course - now actually opens without a motor to stop dust being induced. The noise is also significant - its literally silent, which brings me onto a few points which I think some people having cleared up. Firstly, yes, it DOES have a fan built in. As you switch the console on, it wirls around like a laptop to blow away dust, and to test it basically. It's just as well its there though - when it starts to whirl as the console gets hot, it blows out alot of hot air through the vents. Luckily, I've found some small extra fans that can be attatched via the USB port at the front to buy.
As far as entertainment goes, the PS2 is stronger than ever. With a catologue of hundreds of games - both old and new, this is the perfect console. Its portability allows me to simply take it from one room to another (when the antiques roadshow is on...) in minutes, because I bought a seperate AV cable for just a few pound which I leave hooked up to another telly. And I don't think any other console at the moment can provide this portabilty, entertainment value, and money value (games pre-owned for less than £10) apart from the Playstation 2 Slimline, which is by far still going strong!

(P.S - this silver version will attract less dust)

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning new re-design, 15 May 2005
By B.A.Nohel "ben.nohel" (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
First of all, if you already own the current PS2 larger old model and there is nothing wrong with it then really there is no point on replacing it with the newer slimline version even though the price is that good. If you haven't got a PS2 or your having problems with it then so should consider getting this as its 75% smaller so much easier to move around and store, looks much more attractive even though the last one had a very unique image and this also very quiet plus it does not over-heat like a lot of people are saying becuase it has an extension on the DC power adapter to absorb the heat. If you had disc tray problems or disc-error reading on the previous PS2 (which I never had) the new slimline has changed the disc tray opens as the slider opening failed to work a lot of the time, slimline has the same flip-lid style that the Playstation 1 had and its much better. If your thinking about getting one or you will be sortly, I suggest you go for this new colour version which was released on the 13th.

The new Silver Satin style finish looks gorgeous and makes sense to go for this over the black one because today 90% of audio/visual and electrical equipment is grey or silver and not much black anymore even though black does look quite nice, but if your entertainment systems and electrical products are silver this will look rather splended. If your fussy about everything to look good (like myself) then you may as well get the silver controller, memory card and remote but if your not to bothered and you have some of them in black dont just replace them as the black and silver ones do exactly the same thing.
