4.0 out of 5 stars Up and running 11 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book will get you from the stage of staring at your ukelele to actually doing something with it because it shows you how to tune it and how to play basic chords. I'm not ready to go on tour just yet but I'm sure it's only a matter of time.

5.0 out of 5 stars To the point 24 May 2010
Format:Paperback
There are many 'Teach Yourself Ukulele'guides, and I've bought a few. This is by far the most concise and easiest to follow that I have come across as yet. It's clear, well presented and builds logically (unlike many of others on the market). I'd highly recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good intro to an easy and fun instrument 15 Aug 2009
By J. Baldwin VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book will get you up and running in no time. If you've just got your Uke, or are getting one at the same time as this book, get some pitch pipes as well as you'll need them. Also bear in mind that new Ukes need the screws tightening to stop them going out of tune. Otherwise you'll get to page 3 of this book and assume you're doing it wrong!
Within minutes you'll be playing a few simple chords - enough to play a few songs or just improvise and practice your rhythm. It's well-laid out and easy to follow. Recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful 7 July 2010
By Tosh
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A useful book but not a great deal of fun. I wouldn't suggest this as a learning aid for children, or anyone who isn't that dedicated to learning. If you are new to music, or a bit older, like me, you'll have to come to terms with learning how to read music as well as learning to play your uke! It is all very clear but I was expecting more from the CD, which is just another version of the book, but if you need to hear how a note should sound then it's quite handy. I bought this with 'Jumpin' Jims Ukulele Country' and it's worked out well - learn the technical stuff with the Tutorial book and practice and have some fun with the song book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Starts well becomes dull quickly. 25 May 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Nicely laid out book, with reasonable illustrations, fairly clear explanations (using American nomenclature). The CD follows the book exactly and track numbers for lessons and excercises are sign-posted on every page.
Theres a section at the end of the book giving instructions for changing the strings on your Ukulele.
There is also a Chord Glossary, though it is hardly extensive.

The book concentrates on playing single notes, not in order to teach a finger-picking style but simply to teach music notation.

That's the goods stuff.

Most of the excercises are fairly dull with little or no discernable melody. There may be reasons for this but it makes it hard to tell if you have actually picked your way through an excercise sucessfully and if you have, there isn't much satisfaction to be taken from it.
In short there isn't really enough enjoyable material to keep you interested.

While the book has its good points it's definitely not one for kids and most adults are going want something a little less dull.
There is no level 2 book available as far as I can tell.

5.0 out of 5 stars Play Ukulele Today 15 July 2011
By Janet
Format:Paperback
Does what it says on the cover. A comprehensive tutorial, teaching you everything you need to know and things you didn't even know you wanted to know! I could already read music, but if you cannot read music, this book would certainly teach you the basics. Having said that, if all you want to do is to learn the different chords, and get down to playing the ukulele, you can do that too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book 4 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
Purchased with the instrument for a beginner - excellent book! The CD was good and the instuctions are clear, this helped my daughter make a nice sound from something that looks like a toy guitar! However,a Ukulele is not to be underestimated it's a cheeky little instrument with a nice tone!
