Amazon.co.uk Review

Peter Gabriel has long been revered for his great songwriting, cinematic soundscapes, riveting concerts, and groundbreaking videos. Is it any surprise, then, that Play: The Videos is a music DVD for the ages? Nope. But that doesn't make it any less thrilling to watch or to listen to. Gabriel has assembled and polished an evening-filling 26 clips, all of them collaborations with innovative visual artists and directors like Stephen Johnson, Matt Mahurin, Francois Vogel, and Sean Penn. From the 1977 promo for "Modern Love" to 2003's "Growing Up" and much between, it's all here, and most viewers will be pleasantly surprised to find more than a couple videos they missed along the way. The focus is explicitly on conceptual pieces, the lone visual exception being a 2004 live rendition of "Games Without Frontiers" among the extras.

Gabriel says in an accompanying essay that "music can stand more repetition than video and music together." Play gives us something extra in light of that: fresh 5.1 surround mixes in both Dolby Digital and DTS 96/24 for every track, with Gabriel/U2 production vet Daniel Lanois at the helm for most songs. (You'll get standard DTS sound from DTS-capable DVD players and, even better, lossless high-resolution audio from a DTS 96/24-compatible player.) The surround mixes are nothing short of revelatory, using all available channels to amplify Gabriel's ambient side while breaking out the percussion in fascinating ways and driving home the music's subterranean bass. --Michael Mikesell

The sound on this disc is superb !

If you've got Dts then this is going to sound really crisp , clear, & loud.
Still sounds pretty fine on DD 5:1.

Engineering by Daniel Lanois & Richard Chappell.

Not surprisingly the videos themselves are top-notch. There are of course the classic ones that everyone knows. Others that most likely only PG fans will have seen, & I'm sure many fans will not have seen them all. Congratulations on your good taste & powers of acquisition if you have seen them all before !

There's some nice extras the disc itself.
The plasticine pic cover is very reminiscent of the multi-colours of " Real World ". Nice accompanying insert.

My humble opinion re the tracks:

(given a star rating-marks out of 5 ! -not just considering the video but influenced by how much like the song)

FATHER, SON ***** great moving video, excellently filmed
SLEDGEHAMMER *** just had to be on !
BLOOD OF EDEN ** ok
GAMES WITHOUT FRONTIERS ****
I DON'T REMEMBER *** entertaining !
BIG TIME *** excellent video
LOVETOWN **** (Really glad this is on the DVD,as the cd-om stuff on my "Real World Notes #1" is not being recognised by XP. So at last, once again, I've a playable copy).
RED RAIN **
IN YOUR EYES ** Love love this song. Video ok
DON'T GIVE UP ****
THE BARRY WILLIAMS SHOW *** (Directed by Sean Penn) (Live, this is fun)
WASHING OF THE WATER ***
BIKO ***
KISS THAT FROG ***** excellent excellent video !
MERCY STREET **** One of my favourite PG songs. B&W video right for the song.
GROWING UP *** Good video (The Prisoner revisited !)
SHAKING THE TREE ** Love Youssou -His voice can lift one's soul to another plane (Hear him Live ! )
SHOCK THE MONKEY **
STEAM **
THE DROP *** lovely simple song. Video to fit.
ZAAR **
SOLSBURY HILL **** (Wish I could paint like that ! )
DIGGING IN THE DIRT ***** ( still enjoy this)

Well just one person's opinion. Advise getting it , & making your own :)

First of all I would like to say, "BUY THIS DVD". Now on with the review.

If, like me, you are a huge fan of Peter Gabriel then you will have been waiting a long time for this compilation to come along. (I wore my VHS copy of 'CV' out years ago)

This DVD contains 23 of Pete's finest videos all remixed in glorious 5.1. by Daniel Lanois. And what a good job he has done. You have never heard Gabriel's work like this. I have a Dolby 5.1 system and all of the tracks sound amazing. If you have a DTS system it will sound even better. It makes a refreshing change for an artist to take the time to remix their old videos into 5.1, something normally only done for live concerts. This mix really puts you in the middle of his work and makes videos such as 'Sledgehammer' and 'Big Time' an amazing experience.

Some of the tracks are slightly different to the singles you may remember (Big Time,Shaking The Tree & Steam especially)which may dissapoint some people. I personally think they are just as good, if not better.

The extras include 'Games Without Frontiers' live (not featured on the Growing Up Live DVD), 'Modern Love' original video (a very young PG) and 'The Nest That Sailed The Sky' which features a speeded up montage of the Millenium Dome 'OVO' show filmed from an overhead camera. There are also trailers for other PG DVD's.

All in all this is an excellent DVD. If you are a fan, this is an essential purchase. I would have liked to have seen the alternate video for 'Don't Give Up' that was featured on the 'CV' video and it would have been nice to have seen some videos for 'Rhythm of the Heat', 'More Than This' and 'Come Talk to Me'. Can't complain though because the sound quality is better than a lot of DVD-Audio discs I have, so even if you don't think much of the videos, turn your TV off and just listen to these classics like you have never heard them before.

Thanks Mr Gabriel - just don't leave so long until your next album !!!
