Product Description

Product Description

Once dismissed as a cosy world of teddy bears and fairies, the arrival on the scene of numerous highly original, contemporary and cool graphic artists has transformed perceptions of childrens book illustration in recent years. Children now grow up with a more informed and sophisticated visual diet with cartoons, animated movies, comics, TV and computer games - consuming a vast range of stylistic approaches, and illustrated books have moved to match the demands of a more discerning market. Equally, artists who in the past may not have considered the childrens picturebook as an appropriate vehicle for artistic expression are increasingly drawn to the area. This book showcases some of the most interesting work emerging within the genre from a range of cultural backgrounds. It examines trends in use of media both digital and traditional and discusses the variety of approaches to subject matter.

Fantastically researched overview of interesting children's illustration from all around the world. Great reference for parents looking beyond In the Night Garden and for creatives doing visual research.

Very good 24 Dec 2010
Format:Paperback
I'm a graphic designer who's been toying with the idea of creating a children's book for a while. I bought this out of curiosity and as a starting point and inspiration for possible styles - it contains work from around 30 different illustrators, ranging from simple minimal pencil drawn illustrations through to very detailed painted ones. Each illustrator is given four pages, generally covering one piece of work, the first page also contains a few paragraphs about them. There's a really nice range of work shown as they all have quite different styles from each other. The book is a nice size too. I like it, not much else to say.

Relatively disappointing showcase of artists works - not really what I was looking for but nice book overall. Too many words not enough art.
