Ever since I hit double figures (ie age 10!) Joan Baez has been a part of my musical background. When I fell asleep, bored stiff by Hendrix's uninspired Isle of Wight performance it was Joanie's sweet voice I awoke to. I even remember in my schooldays, a crotchety teacher confiscating our common room Dylan, Beatles and Stones albums until the end of term, but leaving the Baez stuff - clearly approved of.
I bought this particular CD for no other reason than it was cheap and I liked the look of it. It had been many years since my previous JB buy so I didn't know what to expect. What I got was a work of amazing maturity, with Joan using a slightly deeper but much stronger voice than I was used to hearing and songs that really resonated.
I'll not give it 5* because it isn't quite up there with my JB favourites - they are so old now that nostalgia had crept in and possibly deafened me to their faults!
But I will say it is essential for the shelf of anyone that likes well presented, thoughtful music, beautifully sung.

I just love this cd, her words are beautiful her voice is beautiful the music beautiful.it might not be the typical folk Joan Baez but it is stunning, if you are not really into folk this could be a choice as it moves into a different genre.

Amazing that there are no previous reviews of this album yet. It really is good. Joan is in fine voice and the cover nicely captures the playful and somewhat liberated mood. Check it out.

My mate Dave Walton always used to say that Joan Baez could really take the sting out of Dylan . This is from 1992 and she has finally found some grit to add to a voice that was sometimes almost too pristine . This is a fine set of songs and she tops up her own efforts with welcome borrowings from John Stewart , Janis Ian and John Hiatt . Jerry Douglas plays in the backup band . A nice surprise .
