As an adult coming to the flute for the first time, I was recommended this book by my local music shop. It comes with a CD. The important parts are dealt with first - how to put together and care for your flute, which will save you expensive mistakes. It then launches into the fingering note by note, with easy to follow diagrams; and teaches you music theory and notation at the same time. I can't comment on how effective that is, since I already read music, but it seems a gentle intro to what can be a daunting subject. The rest of the book is taken up with many little snippets of well-known tunes (and if you've learnt to play other instruments with books you'll be thoroughly sick of most of these by now!).
The CD is not bad; each note is sounded for you and there is backing music to each track to help you keep time. I would have preferred it without, but it does make you feel you're actually playing rather than just tooting, which is very encouraging if you don't have a teacher. The commentary is not repeated in the book, so it's well worth a listen for extra tips.
For me, the book falls down on what I think may be the most important thing - there simply isn't enough about breathing techniques and I am having difficulty covering both the upper and lower registers properly because of this. I suspect this is better taught in person by a teacher, but a quick search on the internet revealed quite a few tricks to try out. It's a pity this book lacks that, or I'd have given it five stars. All in all, for the small amount it costs, it's probably a good start to learning, but I feel it's something you could get through very quickly. There is a second volume available for more advanced playing.
