Another chilling story of life in a harsh, beautiful environment. The plot is intriguing, but what really beguiles is the gritty, intelligent, wild Kate Shugak and Dana Stabenow's talent in bringing us right into the landscape, letting us all become Alaskans for a time. The writing is visual and clips along, the supporting cast memorable and empathetic. Kate's world stays in my mind long after the book is finished. Stabenow can't write fast enough for me.

I am reading the series on my Kindle and was most disappointed to find that the first 14% of this one had been tacked onto the previous one as a taster, I felt short changed and it was not one of the best stories. However, things are improving again as I read on through the series

I am always scared to pick mushrooms off the golf course simply because I don't know which are the poisonous ones ! To be in Alaska picking buckets of them at $2 a pound sounds very tempting, to say the least! Thats where Kate and Bobby, together with his new girlfriend Di, find themselves at the start of the book. Soon enough they are picking more than mushrooms when a dead body appears. This means a quick flight in for Chopper Jim and the action takes off. The finding of the body leads to intrigue in the nearest village where some religious skulduggery comes to light. The corpse is identified as the son of the local fundamentalist preacher and Kate's natural prejudices are aroused.
The conclusion to the story is not be a dead cert result for anyone, but often such endings are the most interesting, if a little frustrating for us readers.
