We bought this for our son when he was about 20 months old. We didn't play with the bits and pieces much until he was almost 2 (but did play with the doh a lot). I think an older child would have good fun with this on their own, but our son has great fun with it when we are playing with him (he's now 2 and a bit). The shape cutters are good, but can be a bit difficult to get them out. It doesn't stop us from having fun though. Not a bad Play Doh set, but not our favourite either.
