A very well written account of all elements of the 1...c6 response, covering a lot of ground in great detail (a very detailed section on 2 c4 for example - which is often given little attention). It is one of the clearest books on openings I have ever read, covering the reasoning behind every move and deep discussions of ideal positioning and 'improving' moves.
If I was being picky, there are a few points worth noting:
- this is heavily written from black's perspective, players wishing to use 1. e4 as white and then using this book as a guide to playing against the caro-kann defence might find it less useful
- Ms Houska's own style comes through fairly heavily (advocating castling short as black for example) and you can tell when you are reading passages of play of which she approves. Those she doesn't approve of are given shorter shrift than perhaps they deserve.
- There are a number of situations where she suggests an alternative for white that is a better move than the one she extrapolates, but then only concludes that the better move leads to an even game (whereas the line she extrapolates leads to better chances for black).
However, these are minor complaints - it is an excellent guide to the play that develops after the Caro-Kann opening.
