Good but not on its own.
on 25 June 2009
I decided recently to start an instrument again and this was one of my purchases. I am a total newbie, who hasnt played an instrument for 20 years or more. I bought this and a couple of other books (bass guitar for dummies)
The dvd starts out well, the host explains everything in a very easy to understand way, and gets you playing some basic bass lines very quickly. this really enthused me and encouraged me. The onscreen displays the information in a very easy to follow way at first, and the music is easy to play along with.
However once those initial lessons are over, it becomes a lot less easy to follow and I rapidly got lost and felt rather confused. I was constantly rewinding the dvd, and trying again and this got rather repetitive and frustrating. The on screen displays seemed a less easy to follow, in the later examples they appeared as you needed to be playing them and it was too fast for a newbie to react to.
With a few weeks of reading and a couple of lessons from a teacher, the DVD now makes a little more sense, and is a little useful. It is good, but I can't see it teaching you bass guitar on it's own. You will need other instruction. A teacher has proven far more valuable than any of the books or dvds I've purchased so far.
So as a learning/practice aid it's quite good, but it should not be sole one. As I progress with guitar (I'm upto basic 12 bar blues now) I will revisit the dvd periodically and update my review.
