I *LOVE* Frank's booklet/CD sets because 1) they're inexpensive, and 2) they're worth a fortune. I think of these as my playing partners, because they're SIMPLE, but the benefits you will reap from just playing along with one of them every morning is immeasurable.
For example, take this particular one. It could be one of the solo/improv volumes, but this one will work. Put on the CD. If the tempos are too fast, use one of the many software programs available to slow them down. This is not to say they're very fast - they are not! But I like to practice things slow for a good long while, then gradually turn up the tempo.
So, with the CD going, or mp3s, use the booklet as charts or lead sheets. Now you're in a situation very close to playing with your buddy who brought over his guitar, and another buddy who brought over his bass. But your buddies are some of the best in the world!
Now, play along. Strum (comp) along. Play the melodies. If you screw up, keep going. Eventually you'll get it right every time, and eventually you'll start embellishing the melodies, and in time you just might be improvising! This is very close to how prodigies, and talented young children from musical families learn to play. Low pressure, professional musicians to play along with. No limit to how many "repeats" you can do.
Consider getting all of these -- use one every day and amaze yourself! I like them a lot.
