This compilation is yet another Boney M. compilation that's including mainly edits (of the original material) as well as a few remixes. Therefore it fails.

The music on this compilation is still good as the Boney M. material speaks for itself, but if you want the original material in original length (single- and album-versions) with Boney M. that went to the top of the charts back in the seventies/eighties, then stay away from this release and go for the compilations mentioned in the end of this review.

The normal record buyer may not notice it, but the greatest part of the single hits/releases on this compilation are mastered from another compilation that was including edits (an entire album where the original tracks had been edited down in time). An edit means that a song has been shortened (verses cut out, instrumental parts removed etc.). But why do that, when the original material should speak for itself?

The Boney M. catalogue is very complex because their material has been twisted and shorted in every way possible. Unfortunately Demon Music Group who compiled this compilation wasn't aware of the complex Boney M. catalogue.

On the Demon Music Group web-site, they have the following statement about their Music Club Deluxe series:

"With over a million units sold and more than a 100 titles, Music Club Deluxe is DMG's outstanding mid-priced 2CD single artist range. It boasts top quality repertoire from household names with selections and sleeve notes by experts for novices and fans alike and striking artwork with slip-cased packaging."

Because of the statement above, one can only wonder why the liner-notes of this compilation have several mistakes during the storyline?

As a seasoned follower of Boney M compilations, I thought this one isn't bad. Well packaged with an unusually smiling group on the cover and a serious analytical essay - and there haven't been many of those about Boney M.

For the casual listener, all the hits are here and the collection covers the full period of the group's glory days from the helium highs of the late 70s to the under rated space themed tracks from Ten Thousand Lightyears and their disappointing Eye Dance finale of 1985.

Whilst many of the tracks aren't in their strictly original form, often remixed and edited, there are some treats. One of the few tracks from Night Flight To Venus not previously re-tinkered with by Frank Farian is "Heart of Gold". Here it is presented with subtle additional synth and Hammond organ lines - a treat for the hardy fan, and new to my ears.

Only one criticism, an over-reliance on the ghastly Farian falsetto vocal tracks where neither Liz Mitchell or Marcia Barrett appear: Eye Dance, Oceans of Fantasy, Dancing in the Streets. Without their voices, the Boney M sound is incomplete.

For those really wanting to get into the group's catalogue and the multiplicity of remix versions, get hold of the Russian bootleg "Collector's Edition" of the original albums where you can unearth gems like the original 14" Night Flight/Rasputin first pressing mix, which is truly awesome.

I spent a long time looking at various Boney M Selections and I am very pleased with my purchase. Great hits and also received a download of the CD for just 50p more. Would highly recommend.

Not a great lover of the group (I'm more into the 50s and 60s), but certainly got some great tracks on the album.
