Product Description

Every track on this 3 CD set was a top 15 hit! The inclusion of Cliff's hit single "What Car?" from 2005 makes this the most up-to-date Cliff compilation on the market. Between 1959 to 2005, he had a staggering 36 top 10 albums including 7 no. 1's. He has sold almost 21 million singles in the UK was awarded the Outstanding Contribution to British Music at the 1989 BRITS, was made an OBE in 1980 and knighted in 1995. He also holds the unique achievement of a UK no. 1 in five different decades. He remains an institution in Britain, where he is one of our most popular entertainers of all time.

BBC Review

Ok, forget the tennis; forget the religious affiliations; forget the knighthood, the basic fact is this: Everyone loves at least one Cliff hit, and there are (gulp) 74of 'emon this exemplary 3 disc set! All of them made the top 15!! Talk about spoilt for choice...

The boy from Winchmore Hill's career began as the UK's very own Elvis and his first smash, "Move It", still remains a mean 'n' moody slice of lip curling. While this British brand of rock never became any lewder, Cliff's pop sensibilities remained finely honed.

From the early stuff, backed by the mighty Shadows and aided by the legendary Norrie Paramor, to latter day classics as ''Devil Woman'', and ''We Don't Talk Anymore'',The Platinum Collection is packed with variety that, while often verging into MOR cheesiness, always remains more top quality stilton than processed slices. The man remains an institution... --Chris Jones

If you're in the market for a reasonably priced compilation of Cliff's hits, The Platinum Collection is just what you're looking for. This 74 song career-spanning retrospective touches all the bases. There's Cliff the early rocker, Cliff the boy next door beat balladeer, Cliff the young romantic, Cliff the melodic movie star and Cliff the chirpy Eurovision exponent. And that's not all. Drawing from the mid-70s onwards, we also get liberal helpings of the recharged Cliff, returning to his pop/rock roots with the help of producers like Bruce Welch and Alan Tarney.
Most notable is how well this stuff stands up. To be sure, here and there the odd track may now sound a little twee --- I could personally do without Good Times and Big Ship. But they're very much the exceptions. As a whole, what we have is good pop songs, well produced and arranged. And the singing is always well crafted and sometimes brilliant. You won't do better anywhere!

Back in 1958 a seventeen year old boy called Cliff Richard went to HMV in Oxford Street with his friends to cut a demo record called “Lawdy Miss Clawdy". At that point they didn't think that the Columbia label of EMI was going to be interested in them. They were wrong. They were taken to see Norrie Paramor and a couple of days later Ian Ralph Samwell wrote Europe's legendary rock n roll song "Move It". It was sitting on the B Side of a cover called "School Boy Crush". Jack Goode who was the producer of The Oh Boy Show instantly recognized "Move It" as a hit and teenagers did likewise and give Cliff his debut single at No2. When Jack Goode said" Here's the boy who's gonna rock the world Cliff Richard" he did just that and this classic selection of records spanning 47 years proves that. After all he's the only British Artist who has a career on par with Elvis. If you listen to his early numbers you can feel the raw voice of rock n roll, but as the years progress the quality just oozes out at you. We Don't Talk Anymore and Carrie have been called "some of the best pop records ever made". The records speak for themselves. If you listen to the Something's Going On tracks you know that Cliff isn't going anywhere and he himself has said that he isn't going to stop making records. When reviewing Cliff it's all about research and this album just proves what a glowing career he has had and gees to show why he's Britain’s most successful pop star ever

British readers will already know Cliff and his music (As hard as this may be to believe, Cliff is almost unknown in the US. I have written a different review for this album on Amazon.us), so I won't go into any detail on the music itself. Most Cliff fans will already have one or more of his "Best of..." collections, such as "The Whole Story." Well then, is there any reason to buy this collection? Yes, there is. For example, "The Whole Story" has 46 songs, whereas "Platinum" has 74. "Platinum" includes nearly every one of Cliff's British top ten hits--over 60 songs--and all the songs hit at least the top 20. The top ten omissions are his Christmas hits and duets. However, all the Christmas hits can be found on the "Cliff at Christmas" album. Cliff is releasing a duets album later this year, where you'll probably get the other top tens. So, with this collection and the other two albums, you'll have just about every top ten hit from this amazingly successful performer. But this collection itself has so many great songs. Now that you can find used copies, the price is falling to almost pocket change and it's highly worth it.

This is Cliff Richard at his ultimate best - as befits the UK's official Ultimate Pop Star!! He may be called Peter Pan of Pop but diminutive his talent is not - as is proved by the sheer variety of songs on this bumper CD set, illustrating all Cliff's vocal ranges with a good selection of genres, from 50's rock and roll to 20th century country rock. If ever there was a product that would win over a non-Cliff fan, and provide a quality addition to any Cliff fan's collection, this is it.

Containing all of his hits which made the top 15 (except the Christmas tunes), this album has something for everyone, Cliff fan or not. Believe it or not, Cliff has made some of his best records in the last 15 years but they have sadly suffered from lack of airplay. CD 3 showcases these songs perfectly, demonstrating Cliff's superb vocal ability. Listen to 'Can't keep this feeling in' and you'll understand! This album could reintroduce Cliff to many - buy it!!

A 3CD set full of classic hits spanning 45 years from the UKs biggest selling singles artist priced at £12.99 - isn't rip off its a STEAL and whatever money Cliff makes out of it you can be sure a percentage goes to charity and by charity I don't mean freebie holidays for the Blairs .
Theres been quite a few hits compilations its inevitable when you've had a career spanning the decades like Sir Cliff Richard but this is the best to date its bang up to date featuring the hits from the most recent album 'Somethings Goin On'.
For anyone with a casual interest in Cliff this is the hits album to buy. If your more of a serious fan the Singles Collection is more definitive if not more up to date.
Playing the first song on the album 'Move It' which John Lennon hailed as the most influential British record ever made and the last hit What Car? (which got rave reviews and a top 20 chart placing ) back to back- it sounds like Cliff has come full circle and his voice and enthusiasm is as fresh today as it was when he first started out.
Having heard the more recent slightly rushed live versions of 'Living Doll' however its good to go back and rediscover the original recording which has an effortless vocal the most laid back mellowist sound you are ever likely to hear which is complimented by the classic guitar solo from Hank Marvin.
Theres some classic cuts Tavelling Light, I'm Looking Out the window and It'll Be Me are like the best blues pop recordings you never heard. Then theres the classic shadows sound paving the way for the Beatles and the bands that followed.
