A fine collection, but a repeated one.,
By
This review is from: The Platinum Collection (Audio CD)
This collection contains some of Chris Rea's finest songs from his "previous life" as a middle of the road rock/pop recording artist. The collection is notable for having a number of songs that non-owners of Rea's earlier albums may not have heard.
However, times have changed and Chris has moved to his own record label, with new musicians (fabulous ones) and a new blues style, which is the root of all his previous music, unadulterated by the need for commercial success that working for a large label brings. Keen eyed buyes will notice that this compilation is released by Warner - not Chris's own label Jazzee Blue. Want to hear some great rock/pop? Buy this if you don't already have the tracks. Want to hear some fantastic blues? Buy one of his newer albums. Want the best of both worlds and a great live performance to boot? Buy the latest offering from Chris's farewell tour. Better yet, buy them all!

Not yet ANOTHER Best Of... Album?!,
By oliraceking (London, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Platinum Collection (Audio CD)
Another year, another Chris Rea collection CD. It's utterly rediculous that they keep on releasing Chris Rea compilation albums. This is now the 5th in 18 years. And this one is only slightly recommendable because it features some great unkown (to non-Rea fans) tracks.
Included are some of his 80's stuff which is now acceptable to market because the 80's sound is slowly coming back into fashion. So very 80's tracks like "I Don't Know What It Is But I Love It," don't sound too out of place like they would have when Rea was more popular in the 90's. As a committed Rea fan myself I have the albums from which these new tracks come from, and my advice is buy the albums (which you can nowadays dirt cheap). Wired To The Moon is a great song but also a great album, and Water Sign (the album) has 2 tracks from it on this album - but they're not the 2 best from that album. I wish more people could hear "Nothing's Happening By The Sea," which is one of Rea's best songs. "Things Lovers Should Do," is from one of his very early albums from the late 70's, and again it's a strange choice to include here because it doesn't seem to fit into any kind of linear listening experience compare to the earlier Best Of albums. I don't know why they made this collection, there's nothing particularly 'platinum' about it. If they wanted to release some less well known Rea stuff to go with the well known tracks (half of which are reprised for the umpteenth time here), they should have done so. Instead this is a half hearted attempt to sell some well known, and some rarely heard, songs. If you do buy this CD and like the rare stuff, buy the albums those songs came from because most feature songs that are better. Songs 5/5. CD = 2/5 (another complete rip-off).

Another Best of Chris Rea - WHY OH WHY,
By
This review is from: The Platinum Collection (Audio CD)
I really like CR music the earlier stuff and especially the later blues DDTSR, and was surprised when I saw this CD - 'ANOTHER best of' most of which have been on other best of CR albums, at least 4 or 5 CD's.
I was hoping there would be a best of his newer music, and after seeing him in concert this year, I was looking forward to a live CD / DVD of his last tour 2006, so come on record company how about doing it. Seems to me they are still trying to market CR as middle of the road when in fact he is now really into the blues and jazz scene.
