Detroit-Melodic-European-Techno Side,
By
This review is from: Platform (Audio CD)
Before the release of this album I was already a big fan of Christian Smith's productions (and John Selway as well), so when I found out about this release and the label that was behind it I didnt hesitate and pre ordered it right away. There was no way I could be disappointed, and also it seemed to be a really interesting proposal. And I wasn't wrong, this turned out to be a great and solid album, full of awesome tunes and a lot of energy.
Disc 1 is like Detroit techno under an european point of view, where the result is really nice. Personally, I see this disc as a techno lesson, and the way the genre has evolved through time. As Christian says, he didn't take the aggressive side of Detroit techno but the melodic side. And the result is very appealing. Disc 2 is more club oriented. Since the first track you know it is going to be a heavy and dirty ride, but fine at the same time if you know what I mean. Definitely is a great disc for a nice party, but also for a good headphones session or for driving at night in the city. One thing I love of both mixes is the way the rhythm section sounds: the kick drum and snare are fat and consistent, and the bass lines are dirty and explosive which through a nice pair of speakers is a pure delight. This is a great start for this new Renaissance series and they made a great decision in asking Christian to be the first one to take the controls, I'm really looking forward to see who is going to be the next one. As final words, if you want to hear great and fine techno tunes with a few housey touches this is the album for you.
