Good book 21 May 2011

I have bought a couple of books particularly for shady gardens recently, and this is a good one with lots of helpful information on plants, maintenance and little construction projects BUT it lacks one vital thing in the plant descriptions, and that is the type of soil each plant requires. I currently garden on serious chalk, and my previous garden consisted of pot-throwing clay, and it is essential to get the right plants when the soil is so specific. I have to say the recent Alan Titchmarsh book for Gardening in the Shade is much better in that respect as it provides ALL the information I need, and I wish I'd stuck with just that one.

Having said that, if you have average soil (or own more than one gardening book already!) then I would recommend this.

(The Gardeners' World 101 Shade-loving Plants book similarly lacks soil information but is high on quantity of beautifully photographed plants.)

We bought this book for ideas as we have a perpetually shady area on one side of the garden. The first quarter of the book is devoted to how shade comes about ie shade caused by other plants, shade caused by masonry etc, the uses of shade and planning with a shady area. However, the meat of the book which is worth a Five Star rating is about 120 pages of detail on the particular plants that will thrive in this environment. Absolutely invaluable as a starting point for planning your shady area, rather than heading down to the nearest garden centre and taking pot luck.
