Product Description

From the Inside Flap

Plants, Potions and Oils for Horses, the third in the Compass Points series, has been written in order to preserve the use of traditional remedies for horses. Over the years, the author has dedicated himself to collecting recipes and potions from the older generation and from Romany friends. Some of these remedies are extremely old, some of them new but all of them benign. The author explains how the most surprising materials can help the horse - whether it be to alleviate pain, encourage healing or just to keep him in good health.

About the Author

Chris Dyer is an enthusiastic advocate for homeopathy. However, he has always worked closely with his vet and has learned which recipes are especially complimentary to modern veterinary science. The Author trains Arab racehorses and also finds time to tour the country giving talks about plants, potions and oils for horses.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must for any horse owner, 11 Sep 2000
By L. J. Atack (Great Britain) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A brilliant little book full of useful tips and hints. EVERYTHING we have tried has worked. I have to disagree with the other reviewer whilst respecting her position. My horses have suffered the agonies of mud fever and my pocket has paid the price! Since following his advice and feeding the recommended dosage of cod liver oil we had NO incidence of this painful condition last year on our 5 horses. We have also used his oil mix on some suspicious looking scabs that one of the mares developed this summer..a reaction to alph alpha and they cleared up within a week. With reference to the butter a friend's mare got into the neighbouring field and pigged out on corn. Naturally she colicked. The vet was called and gave the usual injections. The next day she was still off colour and in discomfort, my friend tried the butter and sure enough 15 minutes later the mare passed the corn, stalks and all and expressed a huge sigh of relief. I am not saying it will work in all instances but 50p for half a pound of butter is worth a try before expending £90 on the vet! Given the unnatural environment many of us are forced to keep our horses in these days this book contains readily accessible relatively natural remedies used by our for-fathers and in danger of being forgotten in our desire for a quick fix. Buy it and try it, it is money well spent.

3.0 out of 5 stars An interesting little book which is thought provoking., 21 Jun 2000
By Jane123 (England) - See all my reviews
Chris Dyer has a lot of experience with oils and herbs and their use on equines. He gives some long forgotten remedies, which are as relevant today as they were a century ago. His enthusiasm jumps out of this useful handbook, which is written in a chatty, easy to read way. HOWEVER my main concern is his continual reference to and use of cod liver oil as a suplement in the horses diet. Horses are herbivores and should not be given animal by-products.(Remember BSE in cattle) The use of oil for horse diets may be Ok if it is plant based. Also the use of other products that he recommends such as eggs and butter need to be questioned. That said this book has some very useful tips in it and should not be dismissed. I would recommend A Modern Horse Herbal by Hilary Page Self as a more in depth and detailed manual.
