4.0 out of 5 stars Plantronics x40 Headphones 25 Oct 2011
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
First impressions were very good. For a £30 set of headphones, this gear is very well put-together, certainly better than my old set of JVCs and even my current entry-level Sennheisers. The ear cushions are the furry type, not the leather-ette effect that makes your ears sweaty.

The mics drops down from just inside the left arm and looks quite neat; makes you think you look like Maverick out of Top Gun ("We're going ballistic man!")

There is a volume control for audio and a volume/mute control for the mic, all work well & are easily accessed behind each can.

The earphones come with about 4m of cable, at the end of which there is a USB plug and 2x "pass-through" phono connectors. The idea is that the 2x phono plugs deal with the stereo sound and the UBS deals with the voice.

Here lies the biggest issue with this item; you must be capable of supplying 2x phonos for stereo input. I'm using HDMI for video and the optical adapter for sound to a 5.1 decoder. As part of this, you get 2x phono outputs so I'm connected to these. Otherwise I might be in trouble, would I be forced to use the component cable?

There's also an included 3.5mm audio cable to attach these can to most other equipment. Nice addition.

The sound quality can be described as average. It's certainly tuned to be most compatible with gaming; these are not audiophile grade! There's adequate bass & volume but thoroughly lacks detail & treble. I don't think you'll worry too much when blowing-up Covenant scum!

Overall I can't complain too much about these cans. These would have been absolutely ideal for me when my xbox was in the lounge (prior me getting a full 5.1 system in a dedicated games room), certainly a good introduction but check your connections!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice, Modern Looking Headphones 30 Oct 2011
By Amazon Customer VINE VOICE
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
Presentation: Good, nice colour, very modern.

Installation: A lot of wires. You have a wire from the usb, a wire from the Audio (red/white) on the back of the xbox, a wire from the controller. I guess it's necessary.

Sound Quality: Very good indeed, although some distortion at high volume levels. They're not super high end pro audiophile sound quality by any means, but pleasant and much better than anything else you're going to get out of your tv's built in speakers or a rubbish mic headset. I'd be happy to use them for gaming, perhaps not my first choice for listening to music, but it wouldn't give me a headache. Bear in mind that the limiting factor in terms of sound quality is likely to be the xbox.

Comfort: I did find my head squashed a bit, the "internal force" is quite strong, but I think you would get used to it. I'm normally a "earbud" user. Certainly no major sharp bits poking into your head or any red marks when you take them off, which you can't grumble about really.

Summary: A decent pair of headphones if you do a lot of gaming at night or in private. Bear in mind that if you talk into the mic, you will be talking too loud, and you will look silly. :)
If you want to use these for music on your pc or similar, you will need an adaptor (3.5mm->2xRCA). You still need to plug the usb in, as that seems to power an amp inside the headphones.

Issues: One major issue, not sure what you're supposed to do if you use hdmi on your xbox, since you don't get the red/white composite sound output that way. So you wouldn't be able to use these earphones in that situation, as far as I can tell!

4.0 out of 5 stars A decent entry-level headset 26 Oct 2011
By SpecialOrder937 TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
This headset shares the same basic design with its wireless sibling the GameCOM by Plantronics X95 Wireless Headset (Xbox 360). This also means that it shares the same deficiencies: square earcups (in my experience the most comfortable earcups are not square or round but oval-shaped) and no option to connect it via optical digital. This poses a problem if you connect your Xbox via HDMI, since you don't have access to the necessary red and white RCA connectors. You can, of course, connect the headset to the audio output of your television, but only if your TV has those selfsame RCA connectors, which many don't. Plantronics really need to address this issue in the next revision of their gaming range.

In pictures of the x40 online it often looks silvery, but the unit I was sent is white or off-white. The colour is actually quite nice-looking, but this is a matter of personal taste. Like the x95, the x40 has foam padding on the headband, cloth-covered earcups and a boom mic that can be tucked up into the headband when not in use. The cable is 5 metres long and also, along with the RCA audio connection, needs to be connected to a free USB port in order to provide power to the headset.

The stereo sound quality from the x40 is excellent, and as yet I haven't experienced the "feedback" issue reported by others. The microphone works well over Xbox Live Chat and, overall, the headset is an excellent choice for entry-level gamers.

3.0 out of 5 stars GameCOM headset 25 Jun 2011
Verified Purchase
Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
Great headset. Sound is good and it is great that the controls are on the headset itself. Why a low star for the product? The reason is you can not use it if you connect XBOX to tv via HDMI cable. You could use it if you buy an extra cable (3.5mm to phono cable). So be warned make sure you are prepared to buy extra cable.
