This introductory textbook, intended for undergraduates, presents an overview of phylogeny in the first two chapters followed by an examination of the historical background. Taxonomic evidence from structural and biochemical characters are considered along with evidence from molecular systematics. Variation and speciation are discussed and this is followed by chapters considering the phylogenetic relationships of the major groups of tracheophytes (excluding angiosperms) and the angiosperm orders. Two appendices present information on botanical nomenclature, and specimen preparation and identification. A taxonomic and subject index is supplied. Lavishly illustrated throughout with many high quality line drawings, an accompanying CD-ROM contains over 600 colour photographs illustrating the variability of vascular plant families.
